TEACHING STUDENTS TO SAIL

4 Lead the spinnaker halyard outside of all rigging, look up to make sure the halyard will run free, and connect it to the knot you just tied in the sheets. Bring this 3-line knot to the side of the boat you will be launching the spinnaker. Attach the sheet that comes from around the forestay (“the guy”) to the clew pointing towards the bow. Attach the sheet that comes from aft (“the sheet”) to the clew pointing towards the stern. Attach the halyard to the head with a bowline knot. The sheets can be attached to the clews using a stopper knot and a half hitch.

5 Once everything is rigged, take the slack out of the sheets and the halyard so they do not get tangled or drag in the water.

6 The last item to set up is the pole. In some boats the pole stays rigged on the deck and in some boats the boat is stowed in the boat unrigged; this is determined by your boat’s design. It is always a good idea to put your pole up fully rigged on the land before raising it under sail for the first time.

Setting a Symmetrical Spinnaker: 1 Sail downwind on a broad reach or run.

2 Clip the windward sheet, or guy, into the outboard end of the spinnaker pole.

3 Connect the topping lift and foreguy to the spinnaker pole then push the spinnaker pole out and forward so it rests on the windward side of the forestay. Secure the inboard end to the ring on the mast. Be careful not to twist the pole when attaching it to the ring, or the guy will not run freely.

4 Adjust the height of the spinnaker pole, which should be kept perpendicular to the jib luff.

tandem. To trim one, you must release the other. 5 Make sure the halyard is free and then raise the spinnaker.

6 As the spinnaker is hoisted, the crew should secure the guy to the deck before pulling the windward clew of the spinnaker to the outboard end of the spinnaker pole and then out from behind the jib. The guy should be pulled aft until the pole is perpendicular to the wind direction.

7 As the sail comes around the bow of the boat, the crew begins to trim the sheet until the spinnaker just fills.

Note: The type of spinnaker sheets will vary, some boats will have one continuous sheet while others will have two separate sheets.

Its height is controlled by adjusting the topping lift and foreguy in
