Progression of Learning - Land Drill
Skill-Based: Physical movements of focus skill. Instructor description:
Rig a boat on a dolly and have the students practice adjusting the sail as the instructor turns the dolly to simulate active trimming and easing. Aſter this, cleat or tie off the jib and have the students practice flying the telltales by turning the boat upwind and downwind.

Activity-Based: Practice the water activities on land. Instructor description:
Te students will divide into groups of two and ‘walk’ the trapezoid course. Tey will hold the jib up in a way so that the telltales are streaming the entire time.

Instructor demonstrates the adjusting of sails to fly the telltales and the turning of the boat to fly the telltales.
Each student individually tries while instructor gives specific and constructive feedback.

Te instructor will walk the course holding the jib and display proper trim on each leg. Use the marks as place holders and designate a wind direction if the area is protected or there is no wind.

Progression of Learning - Instructor Demonstration Instructor demo:
Sail next to the dock and demonstrate steering in different directions and what it does to the telltales. Adjust sail trim to show the leech tell tale position.

SAFETY - Make sure you have another instructor or high-level student to co-teach with you if you are going to demo a skill away from your students safely. One person always needs to be with the class.

Trapezoid Course Description:
Set a trapezoid course. Te shape doesn’t have to be exact, but it should have a variety of points of sail for the sailors to practice flying their telltales. One leg should be entirely upwind.

Have the students form a ‘serpent’ by designating a leader for everyone to follow in a single file line. Te leader or head of the serpent, should be constantly turning in order for each boat to practice flying telltales on a variety of angles.
