The Slot The slot is the space between the jib and the mainsail. Regardless of the size of the jib, this space is very important to keeping the sailboat moving forward efficiently and under control.
The more “open” the slot, the more power will be generated. In lighter air or in choppy conditions having the slot more “open” helps keep the sailboat powered up. A narrow slot will allow the sailboat to point closer to the wind.
Open Slot (Smooth Airflow)
Balanced sail trim for both jib and mainsail.
A common mistake for intermediate sailors is to ease the mainsail in moderate breeze to control their boat. If they ease their mainsail without easing their jib, the slot will be “closed” off and the sailboat will become unbalanced. This is a common mistake in breezier conditions where the mainsail if eased for longer periods of time.
Closed Slot (Turbulent Airflow)
Unbalanced sail trim with jib trimmed in tight & mainsail eased out.
