SAILBOAT FAMILIARIZATION

Conversion To a New Type of Sailboat It is very common for sailors to move into a new type of sailboat as they grow and improve. In addition, if sailors relocate to a different place, they will often sail a new type of sailboat. It is important that you use a teaching progression that will help sailors adapt quickly and effectively to any new type of sailboat. This instruction goes hand-in-hand with teaching the sailors more complex sailing skills.

Sailboat Review & Rigging Whenever possible, do your sailboat familiarization sessions in a setting where all the students can gather around the sailboat. It is preferable to put the sailboat on a protected surface like grass, carpet, or a dolly.

If the sailboat must be in the water, bring it alongside a dock where the sailors can clearly see your demonstration.

E Go from front to back and explain what each fitting and piece of equipment is and how it works.

E Engage the entire class in this process. E Use those students in the group who already know the sailboat to help familiarize the rest.

E Set up a standing rigging and running rigging demonstration by lowering the mast on supports and go over its construction and fittings.

Demonstrate the steps for properly rigging the sailboat. Use those already familiar with the sailboat to lead with guidance from you. Have the students repeat the steps.

Continue the demonstration, covering how to set up the standing rigging, running rigging, sails, foils, and safety equipment. You may not want to cover all of this in one session, but you should certainly cover it all before asking or expecting the students to do it on their own. The point to remember is that whatever system they use for rigging in the first week of the program will be the one they always use.

New Boat Discovery Session Encourage the students to “play” with the sailboat. When a student gets into a new sailboat they need to learn exactly what it can and cannot do. They should be encouraged to capsize it, sail it backward, sail without a rudder, etc. This will help them develop an intuitive understanding of how the sailboat moves, how to be comfortable in the sailboat, and how to be calm around other sailboats.
