WHILE THE GOVERNMENT HAS DISMAYED many in the industry – and business leaders generally – by halting the snail’s progress of airport expansion, elsewhere things are moving at a brisker pace. Talking to people in our sector, most seem willing to embrace the future. Whether it’s


touchless restaurant transactions, ride-sharing or hooking up to the Internet of Things, minds are open to all possibilities that could enhance managed travel. Our cover story (p62) finds travel managers taking a positive approach to the benefits and challenges posed by rapidly evolving mobile tools and apps, while our 2016 Hotlist (p68) reflects the prevalence of technology-driven innovation. At the ITM Ireland conference (p23) we heard how Google is speeding ahead with ‘anticipatory’ technology: your virtual assistant, built from algorithms and fed on your data history, anticipates your needs like a faithful servant of old. And Cityjet veteran Pat Byrne predicted ‘metal-free’ airlines outsourcing aircraft and crew to third parties.


Meanwhile, as the endless saga of the UK’s strained


relationship with Europe rumbles on, we look at the wider picture – the emerging economies around the world (p78) where many of your businesses are weighing up the risks and rewards of trading in these dynamic but often volatile markets.
