COMPANY PROFILE HALLSTAR

Creating ingredients that prioritize environmental attributes, circularity, and sustainable design principles is a key pillar of Hallstar Beauty’s product development approach. Our regulatory team engages early in the process and remains involved through commercialization. This close engagement ensures product safety and regulatory requirements are met and designed into the product upfront. Furthermore, we always consider the impact of agricultural sourcing on growers and their communities. Our supply chain choices have a social and ethical component that is critical to Hallstar Beauty’s core values.

EXAMPLES OF HALLSTAR BEAUTY’S SUSTAINABLE INGREDIENTS CLEAR Oléoactif®: The development journey of this natural active illustrates Hallstar Beauty’s expertise in value chain sustainability – from the development team’s relationships with farmers to planet-friendly production methods and low carbon footprint to upcycling of the production byproduct. It includes best harvesting practices: wild picking (manual), no irrigation, low environmental impact, and fair remuneration of harvesters. The discarded raw material -- a blend of thyme leaves, stems and flowers – that we upcycle to make CLEAR Oléoactif® has been valorized as a food industry co-product.

Olivem® 2090: Olive oil fatty acids, like those used in Hallstar Beauty’s Olivem® product line, are known for their compatibility with skin and are often used to manufacture naturally derived emulsifiers. An added plus is they can be sustainably sourced; i.e., the raw materials can be upcycled from the production waste created by olive oil manufacturing. For w-o emulsifier Olivem 2090, we leverage this upcycled manufacturing waste to produce a unique polyglyceryl polyricinoleate (PGPR) co-emulsifier that delivers superior performance and lighter skin feel than a traditional PGPR, while retaining its characteristic stability.

FILL Oléoactif®: For another of our lipidic actives from France, we use upcycled olive leaves and myrtle leaves from sustainable, wild picking. At the end of the production process, 100% of the biowaste is recycled. The press cake is collected by a local firm specializing in the valorization of organic materials by composting. And olive oil (used for cleaning filtration equipment) is collected by a company that processes used edible oils, transforming them into a biofuel that meets European diesel standard EN590, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 87%.

Biochemica® Craft Shea Butter: Hallstar sources its shea butter from community co-ops in West Africa, directly benefitting the economic empowerment of thousands of local women. Instead of selling their harvested nuts just once a year to be shipped out and processed in industrial factories, the women organize themselves into cooperatives and process the shea butter all year round, ensuring that they earn a greater portion of the proceeds and are paid throughout the year, not just at harvest time.
