Accounting for 69.9 per cent of online casino fraud, bonus abuse remains one of the most popular forms of iGaming exploitation according to Trackier, mainly due to how easy it is to perform. Te scheme involves registering multiple accounts where customers misuse a company's promotional materials. Tese can be referral bonuses, vouchers, sign-up bonuses, coupons or discounts. As iGaming platforms maximise time-to- value with fast, smooth onboarding processes, they end up failing to catch bonus abusers, says Giedrius.


"On one side, platforms want a smooth onboarding process. Tey don't want to scare off new customers and in many cases, players don't want to reveal themselves and want to hide, perhaps using a VPN, fake emails, phone numbers, etc. But ultimately to withdraw money you need to onboard. Depending on local regulations, you either do identification at the beginning before gamblers can begin betting or at the point of withdrawal. Te first approach is much easier because with the second one it gets more complicated; where's the balance? At what stage should you conduct an identity check?”


Sumsub has a portfolio of solutions to monitor traffic from the point of onboarding to separate legitimate clients from the rest. One of these is a liveness check. A powerful solution that doesn't require a document, liveness checks can be used to counter the threat of multiple accounts through receipt of a picture. If that person in the picture creates another account subject to a liveness check, it's identified as a multi-account. Yet, as Giedrius acknowledges, the bonus abuser has by that point likely been playing the same bonus for some time.


"Tat decision on when to intervene is down to the client. Some are more determined than others not to potentially scare off a customer and want to ensure that it's very likely a fraudster before we request a picture of their face.


“Sometimes it can be tricky to determine the point of intervention unless the client has a specific description. However, because our system is flexible, we can detect potential acts of fraud early and we can set up what needs to happen based on different patterns.


“We have the tools for all manner of approaches, we just need to establish with clients where is that balance for them and at what point they want us to do something. It's not easy and there's always a trade-off."
