POST COVID-19 - THE GROWTH OF SPORTS BETTING According to Te NGB the gambling industry has “experienced a significant rebound since the pandemic, with all modes of gambling experiencing positive growth.” According to the Annual Report of the National Gambling


Board (NGB) for the 2022/23 financial year taxes collected from the industry amounted to R4.1 billion, with the largest contributor being the casino sector. Overall, GGR grew by 37.1 per cent between FY2021/22 and FY2022/23. All gambling modes ex- perienced positive growth with the largest growth occurring in the betting sector, growing 53.3 per cent. Te casino, LPM and bingo sectors grew by 26.6 per cent, 14.4 per cent and 21.6 per cent respectively. As at 31 March 2023, GGR from all modes of gambling totalled R47.2 billion (all quarters). Tis was a R12.8 billion increase from the previous FY2021/22, with betting con- tributing R8.2 billion of this increase. Of this total, betting GGR accounted for the highest share 50.3 per cent, whilst casino GGR accounted for 36.8 per cent. LPM GGR accounted for 9.0 per cent of the market whilst bingo GGR had the least market share in terms of GGR of 3.9 per cent. In the same period, gamblers wagered a total of R815.1 billion -

an annual increase of more than 45 per cent, with around 36.8 per cent of this share being gambled at licensed casinos. Te sports betting industry has more than doubled its value

per cent of the market share in FY2009/10, has seen its share fall to 36.8 per cent in FY2022/23. Other forms of gambling are all on the increase including betting, LPM, and bingo sectors, which have increased their market share according to Te NGB.


CASINOS South Africa has 38 operational casinos, according to the latest NGB data out of a of forty one (41) available in South Africa. Te three companies with the largest market share of ownership of operations casinos are Tsogo Sun Holdings/Hosken Consolidation Investments (15 casinos) Sun International (12 casinos), and Peermont Global (8).
