The gambling industry in Nigeria is highly complex with both the federal government and state governments having a say on how the industry is regulated. This has led to rising tensions between state governments and the federal government over licensing and taxation - a situation which is
likely to get worse before it gets better. Sports betting has been on the rise for years and lawmakers are increasingly concerned over gambling related harm amongst younger players with growing calls that this issue needs to be addressed urgently. Yet in the face of a deepening economic crisis the federal government as well as regulatory bodies on a state level are allowing for an expansion of the industry in Africa’s fourth largest economy.
