Loterj licence battle continues Legislation

Last month, the Lottery of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Loterj) filed a response to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) regarding a lawsuit initiated by Te Attorney General of the Union (AGU). Loterj has asserted that its operations
outside of Rio de Janeiro are both legal and advantageous for fighting money laundering

and enhancing tax revenue. Countering the AGU’s claims, Loterj argued in court that a potential ban on these betting establishments would infringe upon the principle of legal certainty, likely leading to substantial compensation claims and significant declines in revenue. While the government has criticised Loterj’s
regulations against betting-related crimes as insufficient, Loterj maintains it has established a comprehensive system to prevent money laundering, which includes rigorous customer identification, monitoring of transactions, and the reporting of any suspicious activities.
