ESPORTS MYTHS BAYES ESPORTS
For the foreseeable future traditional sports will remain the benchmark by which esports is compared and contrasted. Esports is newer,
smaller - albeit growing rapidly - and significantly more chaotic. Keeping up can be difficult.
dispelling esports misconceptions
Due to esports' positive future outlook, there are myriad new sponsors, partners, and services who view the industry as a potential market to expand into, including gambling stakeholders. Like the betting industry, esports faces its own set of misconceptions. Ben Steenhuisen, Senior Software Architect at Bayes Esports, attempts to clear these inaccuracies up.
One of the most common myths peddled is that all bookmakers (offering esports, traditional sports, or both) are equal in quality. In reality, there are two major metrics which differentiate bookmakers: their gambling licence jurisdiction(s), and their public reputation.
In order to legally offer bets, a bookmaker must be licensed - and there are various licences available throughout the world. Some of these licences require stricter regulation, regular auditing, player protection, and a reliable dispute resolution. Tese are regarded as the top tier of licences and include those from New Jersey, United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Alderney, and Belgium.
Te next tier down (let’s call them ‘mid-tier’) have some of these aforementioned protections but not all of them - making them slightly less safe. Tese include licences from Malta, Antigua & Barbados, and the Philippines. Te rest (bottom tier of licences) have almost no player protection and are, by themselves, a high risk to interact with.

Identifying which licence a bookmaker is operating under can be crucial not just for bettors, but also for businesses and organisations looking to engage in partnerships or sponsorships. However, the reputation of a bookmaker also does count, and large bookmakers with a long positive history can be fine despite holding just a ‘mid-tier’ licence.
One thing to note is that, because of the strict Bayes Esports:
