it’s a lot cheaper to produce and join three 27ins. or 32ins. displays than it is to buy a 43ins. or 50ins. curved display.
A lot of manufacturers are going exploring that route to knock down costs but, in a way, I think that makes the machines look more outdated and less appealing. We’ve got an ‘exploded view’ 27ins. LED edge lit monitor on the stand here which has been deconstructed to show the inner workings to try and attract visitors’ curiosity and help us promote the product. Tis deconstructed approach is something you don’t tend see here at the show, but with customers looking at these options we wanted to showcase the display in a unique way.
In terms of features, a lot of the machines also have LEDs. Suppliers might programme an event in their game that when a button is hit or an action met, they want the LED to turn and flash ‘blue’, or they may want a bank of cabinets all to sync with a colour display so programmable controllers are key. We produced our own LED controller which can be bought separately so the kiosk or gaming manufacturer can use one controller to customise and control all the lights in one big gaming terminal to their desired effect. Tis serves as quite the cost saver.
How have global supply chain issues impacted IDS?
For displays, supply chain issues have been a lot less than the boards. We have had some chip shortages for certain products such as the AD graphics card, but nothing like those suffered with Intel CPUs and the like. On the gaming side, lead times were going up to around 12 months whereas on the display side the worst it got was around six months.
Now the lead times for display components is reducing to six-eight weeks, which is where it was pre-pandemic. In terms of business levels, we are back above pre-pandemic levels. We very rarely stock items and make to order, they are expensive to stock and to make without a customer for them. Te vast majority of or sales are for custom or semi-custom products with specific requirements.
Finally, how are you enjoying the show?
It’s a unique show from the display side of things because ICE is about showcasing finished products. It’s always nice to have enquiries and leads, but these mostly come through the conversations our gaming division have when displays becomes a viable upselling option. In the past is has not always been clear at the show that our displays are a part of the Advantech offering, and this is something we are trying to address with new ideas and new product displays like you can see on the stand this year.
We have had decent enquiries from South Africa and other territories, and good conversations with our third-party suppliers who are also here. Tere are some nice new products and concepts coming through and we have some great ideas for the coming years that we are looking forward to exploring and showcasing.
