Weller Tools Supports Global Auto Parts Manufacturer
By Michael Skinner, Editor F
or 30 years, Electric Compo- nents and Instruments Eu- rope (ECIE) has been a sup-
plier of some of Italy’s most popu- lar automotive brands, including Aprilia, Cagiva, Ducati, and oth- ers. ECIE has a product range that covers headlights and tail- lights, turn signals, various elec- tronics, and dashboards and was an early force in the market with a comprehensive offering of re- search and development, produc- tion, and technical support, when it was founded in the early 1990s. According to ECIE’s Fran -
cesco Tallarico, continuously up- dating its facilities and technolo- gy is a major part of success. Aligning with its mission to make “intelligent technology easy-to-use,” the company chose Weller to help improve its solder- ing process.
The Right Tool “Our customers’ specific re-
quirements are constantly ex- ceeded because of our team mem- bers’ synergy. We provide a mul- ti-disciplinary team of more than

40 people with different back- grounds and experience,” says Tallerico. “Because of our well- rounded team, we have no limits and continue to develop, motivat- ed by the common goal of provid- ing a service of utmost quality.” ECIE purchased Weller’s
WTBR1000 soldering robot to improve its soldering process. “ECIE was hand soldering a sen-
sor for BMW’s back doors and wanted to improve this process. They came to us, and we knew our WTBR1000 soldering robot was the ideal fit,” says Luca Con- te, market development manager at Weller Tools. After testing, ECIE became the first Italian company to purchase the WT- BR1000.
Conte adds that after a few
months, the operator — who had no previous experience with ro- bots and automation — has been able to improve the program sig- nificantly, increasing productivi- ty by 30 percent over hand sol- dering. BMW told ECIE that both quality and reliability have improved dramatically.
Precision and Reliability ECIE is so satisfied with the
Weller soldering robot that it has allowed Weller to bring three po- tential customers to its facility to show them how the robot works. The robot is equipped with Weller’s high-performance sol- dering tools, ensuring consistent quality of solder joints. The solder feeder is de-
signed to be near the workpiece (PCB), pulling the wire rather than pushing it through the feed- er tube. Its robust construction ensures that no sudden move- ments or vibrations negatively affect the workpiece, the compo- nents, or the tools. The robot is designed to
