Spectra-Tech Partners with MIRTEC for High-Quality Inspection

By Allyn Shunk T

o keep their competitive edge, EMS firms must constantly in- vest in state-of-the-art equip-

ment. But, the capabilities of the ma- chine, the cost and its intended use must all balance each other in order to keep production running and make transitioning to a new system as efficient as possible. Spectra-Tech, an EMS company

based in Batavia, Ohio, recently ac- quired five new MIRTEC MV-6 OMNI 3D AOI systems, as a part of its commitment to continuous quality improvement. Founded in 1998, the company’s core employees have a sig- nificant amount of experience in PCB manufacturing. This expertise pro- vides its customers the insight to re- solve manufacturability issues and create solutions that result in low

costs and high-quality products. Spectra-Tech prides itself on a

team with a “do what it takes” atti- tude to deliver each product on time to a satisfied customer, starting with assigning a program manager to each new order. The program manag- er is responsible for interfacing with the customer and helping them to customize specific needs for their in- dividual product lines by tracking costs, schedules and deliveries daily. Changes are managed with timely communication, documentation and by being highly responsive to all cus- tomer requirements.

Selecting an AOI Vendor Craig Wilson, vice president of

Spectra-Tech, says, “After evaluating several leading 3D AOI vendors, we

selected MIRTEC as the best solu- tion to meet our ongoing quality ini- tiatives.” “At MIRTEC we believe in qual-

ity, and Spectra-Tech’s quality stan- dards are some of the highest I’ve ever seen,” adds Brian D’Amico, pres- ident of MIRTEC’s North American sales and service division. “We are extremely pleased to partner with Spectra-Tech and are equal- ly committed to their goal of con- tinuous quality improvement. We look forward to a long and pros- perous relationship between our two organizations.” MIRTEC’s award-winning

MV-6 OMNI 3D AOI machines are configured with the compa- ny’s exclusive OMNI-VISION® 3D in- spection system, which combines 15 MP CoaXPress camera technology with the company’s digital, multi-fre- quency, quad-moiré 3D system. The machines are designed to provide precise height measurement to de- tect lifted component and lifted lead defects, as well as 3D solder fillet in- spection post-reflow. Fully config- ured, these systems include four 10 MP side-view cameras in addition to a 15 MP CoaXPress top-down cam- era, as well as an eight-phase color lighting system. “Our MIRTEC MV-6 OMNI AOI

machines have performed extremely well,” continues Wilson. “The defect detection capability has proven to be outstanding for both SMT and through-hole inspection. We are equally pleased with the level of cus- tomer service and after sales sup- port. Any questions or issues we have had were handled both quickly and efficiently.”

Continuous Improvement The sale of the MIRTEC ma-

chines was facilitated by Fred Binggeli of The Murray Percival Company, which represents MIRTEC in the states of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and the western Pennsylva- nia region. Murray Percival Company is a

third-generation family-owned busi- ness that was founded in 1960 and will celebrate its 60th year in 2020. Customers and peers alike attribute the company’s longevity to its in- tegrity and trustworthiness. Murray Percival is currently a leading sup- plier to the electronics industry in the midwestern U.S., offering thou- sands of capital and distribution products.

Spectra-Tech uses only ERP-

of suppliers, incoming and in-process inspections, AOI, planned mainte- nance, failure analysis, and IPC-cer- tified personnel. Committed to continuous im-

provement, the company has devel- oped a quality management system that provides the framework for measuring and improving its per- formance. To boost customer satisfac- tion and to continue improving, the following systems are in place: peri- odic audits of internal processes; IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 training and development of employees; selec- tion and monitoring of suppliers; measurable quality objectives; man- agement reviews of quality objec- tives; and customer satisfaction re- views.

MIRTEC is also focused on

quality at its core. Its business phi- losophy: to provide customers with the highest quality products and services at competitive pricing. “We understand that electronics manu- facturers are becoming ever more se- lective in purchasing equipment that will add value to their business and provide them with a much needed edge in this highly competitive in- dustry,” says D’Amico. “With this in mind, an increasing number of man- ufacturers are relying upon 3D auto- mated inspection equipment to help increase profitability by improving production yields and reducing costly

rework.” Contact: Spectra-Tech Manufac-
