PI Introduces Compact Rotary Positioner

Auburn, MA — PI (Physik Instrumente) has intro- duced a 1.1 in. (28 mm) low-profile rotary position- er with a high-force torque motor, which is mount- able on a six-axis hexapod, to its PIMag® series. This compact rotary positioner is engineered for fast and precise rotation of samples and optics in

mum angular velocity of 540°/s (90 RPM). The inte- grated direct measuring optical encoder resolves angular motion down to 9 µrad. In closed-loop oper- ation, minimal incremental motion of 27 µrad can be achieved. To hold a position without the need to keep the motor energized, an electromagnetic safety brake is offered as an option. The V-610 has a very low profile of only 1.1

in. (28 mm) allowing integration into tight spaces. The clear aperture of 1 in. (25 mm) is an advan- tage in transmissive-light applications. The V-610 can also be combined with PI’s H-811 hexapod 6 DOF parallel positioner, adding unlimited rotation to this compact six-axis alignment system. An adapter plate for optical tables is also available. A variety of precision motion controllers are

offered, from modular to benchtop devices. For the highest performance, PI recommends the ACS product line of EtherCat-compatible precision motion controllers. PI has in-house engineered solutions with

applications that include medical, metrology, pre- cision micro-assembly, bio-research, optical inspection, and semiconductor testing and manu- facturing. The V-610 is equipped with a high-force

three-phase torque motor direct incremental encoder for position feedback and closed-loop operation. Direct-drive torque motors do not require gears and mechanical com- ponents, eliminating friction in the drive train. Despite its compact size, the ironless motor provides a peak torque of 10.6 in.-lbf (1.2 Nm). Ironless motors provide smoother running with better velocity control, due to the lack of cogging effects caused by permanent magnets. The torque motor provides maxi-

over four decades of experience working with cus- tomers to provide products that meet application demands, and can quickly modify existing product designs or provide a fully customized OEM part to

fit the exact requirements of the application. Contact: PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P., 16

Leine Linde Launches Digital Strain Sensor

Schaumburg, IL — Leine Linde’s new ESR digital strain sensor is now available to monitor structur- al health in North America through Heidenhain Corporation. The sensor is coupled with an encoder using

the EnDat digital interface, which offers high sig- nal quality, accuracy and robustness, when com- pared with conventional strain gauges. The ESR sensor can be mounted on any flat

surface, where load or mechanical forces apply to a body. The device is available for use on cranes, con- veyor belts, bridges, wind turbine rotor blades, or any other application that requires a load to be monitored against a mechanical force. The sensor is also manufactured to withstand harsh environ- ments and exposed conditions. The material in the measuring arm of the sen-

sor unit can be adapted to match the material of the measured body. The purpose is to create a pas- sive temperature compensation and to increase the overall measurement accuracy for applications

with fluctuating ambient temperatures. Contact: Heidenhain Corp., 333 E State

Inert Atmosphere Cabinet Oven from Grieve

Round Lake, IL — Grieve’s No. 799 is an electrically heated 1,382°F (750°C) inert atmosphere cabinet oven, currently used for processing ceramic components prior to assem- bly. The oven’s power is provided by 60 KW alloy wire high-temperature plug heaters. Workspace dimensions are 3.2 x 3.2 x 4.2 ft (1 x 1 x 1.3m). The oven has 12 in. (30.5 cm)

thick insulated walls made of 2 in. (5.1 cm) of 1,900°F (1,038°C) block and 10 in. (25.4 cm) of 10 lb (4.5 kg) density rockwool. The oven has a Type 304, 2B finish stainless steel interior and is equipped with a sole- noid-operated door lock. A 3,000 CFM, 3 HP alloy recir-

culating blower provides horizontal airflow to the oven and a 325 CFM

cooling blower pulls room air through the air jacket on the inner oven for additional cooling.

requires a pressure regulator, flow meter, pressure gauge, and internal high-temperature gasket. Also need- ed was a bellow-type seal in the door- way throat area, 0.5 in. (1.3 cm) thick silicone rubber atmosphere seal and blower shaft seal. Positive latching door hardware, adjustable offset door hinges and an outlet with pressure relief were also added. To keep gas from escaping, the interior seams were welded gas-tight and all wall penetrations fitted with com-

pression fittings. Contact: Grieve Corp., 500 Hart
