The Importance of Touchscreen Technology in Kiosks

Touchscreen technology is now a regular part of our daily lives, whether it be ordering coffee or paying for parking. It would be easy to assume that the dis- play and touch element is a simple “desktop monitor,” but there are many more factors to be considered. Many attributes of a kiosk are assumed, such as that the product being


vended is of a certain quality or services being provided are correct, as well as an obvious expectation that the kiosk be working. These simple criteria are what lead the customer to deem a kiosk good or bad. Even a working kiosk that is of poor quality will have a negative impact on the brand. Crystal Dis- play Systems’ (CDS) goal is to provide high-quality, reliable and aesthetical- ly pleasing products.


Interaction Drives Design Ultimately, once the customer is in front of the kiosk, they will be focus-


ing on the ease and quality of interaction through the display and touch- screen. This is why CDS considers the display and touch choice a critical part of any kiosk design. With access to OEM manufacturers, CDS has the ability to meet these


needs, without sacrificing any of the important design factors — and most im- portantly — is able to offer a competitively priced product. All components used in the design are A-grade industrial components. These are selected to ensure they are fit for the purpose of the product and chosen for their quali- ty, reliability and longevity of supply. Depending on each individual application, CDS offers standard touch-


screen monitors for all environments. Experts are in place to help direct the client to match the application brief to the end product —from a simple indoor information point through to an IP-rated outdoor, high-brightness solution. The company has covered a range of applications, including in-store re-


tail product information kiosks to outdoor extended-temperature, ruggedized, vandal-resistant kiosks. The standard range consists of display sizes from 5 to 86 in. (12.7 to 218 cm), all available with optional touchscreen and choice of interface, including HDMI/integrated PC or Android player. The screens have a wide viewing angle and are available from standard brightness up to super-high 2,500 cd brightness for outdoor applications.


Customized Solutions Where the standard range does not meet the exact brief, CDS has the


ability to design and develop custom solutions. This can be in the form of a tweak to a standard monitor or a full-blown custom design. Many characteristics are con- sidered, including mounting configuration, weight and ease of maintenance. Where a client is already using an ex- isting monitor, CDS can quickly develop a mechanical- ly compatible alternative with no or little tooling and can generally supply samples in three to four weeks.
