Switchgrass is a summer perennial grass that is the leading biomass crop in the United States. It is resistant to many pests and plant diseases and can adapt to grow on millions of acres of US lands which are unable to support crop or food production. Growing switchgrass for biofuel has numerous soil benefits, including: reduced soil erosion and fertiliser runoff, increased soil organic carbon that retains moisture and maintains fertility, and wildlife habitat.
As a renewable biomass source of energy, switchgrass has tremendous potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions relative to other energy sources. ‘Bioenergy’ can be produced by co-firing switchgrass with coal to produce electricity in existing power plants, which offers a near-term energy production alternative, as does eventually using switchgrass as a feedstock in bio-reactors that produce bio-based fuels or industrially important chemicals. There are a number of studies claiming significant energy returns using Switchgrass as a solid fuel in the form of switchgrass pellets or as a feedstock for cellulosic ethanol.
“As uses for switchgrass increase, so will the need to more in-depth characterisation of the material, using an accepted test method with an uncertainty of what’s being measured to a 95% confidence limit, and establishing metrological traceability and/or traceability to 17034 references,” noted Kent Dyer, Chief Chemist at Alpha Resources. “As emerging industries, like alternative biomass, evolve and change, there’s a need for a safety system and assurance that the product is of good integrity, and the quality drives the requirement for CRMs to be used in more testing applications. Creation of Alpha’s first switchgrass CRM offers researchers and industries the confidence of consistent product.”

With the new ELEMENTRAC ONH-p 2, Eltra presents a powerful and robust elemental analyser for measuring oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen concentrations in inorganic samples such as steel, iron, copper or ceramics. The high-detection NDIR and thermal detectors reliably measure elemental concentrations from low ppm levels to the high percentage range. Thanks to the innovative sample lock with pulsed chamber flushing and vertical sample drop, user-friendly and convenient analysis of rod-shaped, granular or powdered samples with a sample weight of up to 2 grams is easily possible.
The analyser can be configured for the determination of only one element (O, N or H)), as well as for multi-element analysis (ON, OH, NH, ONH). Oxygen is determined as CO2
in up to two infrared cells, nitrogen and hydrogen in elemental form in a thermal conductivity cell. The ELEMENTRAC
ONH-p 2 uses an ON mode with carrier gas helium (optionally argon) and an OH mode with carrier gas nitrogen to take advantage of the sensitive thermal conductivity cell for nitrogen and hydrogen measurement.
The chemicals and filters required for operation are arranged in a user-friendly way on the front of the unit and can be concealed behind a removable door during routine operation. This arrangement significantly reduces the time required for maintenance and increases user-friendliness.

The ORP sensor utilises a 99.9% pure platinum electrode and a reference junction that is shared with the pH sensor. Measurement accuracy is ±1 millivolt.
In addition, the 6PFCE features a ground-breaking new way to derive Free Available Chlorine from a predictive ORP value and the actual pH of water. In systems where chlorine is the only sanitiser, this method accurately determines the chemical concentration of free chlorine without the hassle and subjectivity of colorimetric and test-strip methods.
Calibration and maintenance are simple, so the 6PFCE can be serviced by the user. The 6PFCE is also IP67 dust-tight and waterproof, NEMA 6 submersible, and buoyant. Plus, Myron L service and technical support are included for the life of the product.
