Expansion in Catalonia Concentrates Process Solutions Activities on one Site
Aseptic process solutions specialist Telstar is in the process of expanding its Barcelona-based headquarters with the construction of three additional modules, the fi rst phase scheduled to become operational during October 2022. Resulting in a 16,000m2 modern industrial site with 70% of the space intended for production plants, the project will bring the company’s complete activities for the development of integrated and complete solutions in the fi eld of aseptic process manufacturing & installations together at a single location in Catalonia. Full completion of the expansion work for this global provider of complete solutions in process equipment, including turnkey projects and critical installations, is expected within the fi rst half of 2023.
Located in the Orbital 40 Technology & Science Park in Terrassa, the new facilities will also host corporate services and the group’s R&D&I throughout the world. This will include innovation & product development, automatisation & GMP digitalisation services, robotic applications, retrofi tting & upgrading services as well as customer support, including technical training centres and laboratories for the development and optimisation of client lyophilisation & sterilisation processes. Adapted to the specifi c conditions and requirements for environmental quality, manufacturing and qualifi cation of equipment for the biopharmaceutical industry, the new premises will also house the development of vacuum applications for traditional industry and high-vacuum solutions in science and aerospace industries, as well as
instrumentation for industrial and scientifi c research and development.
A period of solid growth between 1998 and 2008 set the basis of strong business development and quick expansion of the company’s integrated activities in Catalonia, which is currently distributed over a total of 8 buildings; this also led to the consolidation of Telstar’s brand internationally as a one-stop shop solution provider of specialised in sterile solutions for aseptic processes.
The move to group the activity centres at a single location for improved effi ciency and increased fl exibility in optimisation of production fl ow, will impact positively on delivery times, as well as improving the health and safety of workers derived from internal movement processes. The company’s metal workshop facilities will continue to operate in an autonomous building beside Telstar’s Logistic Centre located close to the headquarters in OB40 area. This warehouse has a storage capacity of 22,500 m3 and was created in 2019 to absorb additional production.
Certifi ed to ISO 14001 standard, the company will continue the implementation of this environmental management system throughout the new complete site.
With a dedicated offi ce specialising in engineering, construction, and consultancy in Madrid, Telstar follows a multi-site management model, closely collaborating with international technology centres for integrated projects of large volume or complexity. The activities in Barcelona coincide with a development stage tackling sustained organic growth and planned increased capacity at its three main manufacturing locations in Spain, the United Kingdom and China, projected to reach a total of 28,000m2 in 2024, effectively doubling the existing production space.
Part of the Azbil Group, Telstar, one of the 10 major suppliers to the pharmaceutical industry employing 1,000 people, operates in over a hundred countries and has 4 production plants, 7 technology centres and 11 consultancy and engineering services centres, along with commercial offi ces all over the world. The company invests 3% of its turnover in research, development and innovation of its technologies and equipment.

“The thematic breadth of the winners refl ects the variety of solutions the process industry has to offer for a wide range of issues,” said Andreas Förster, CEO of DECHEMA, at the awards ceremony in Frankfurt, held on 24 August 2022. “Start-ups play a very important role in this with their innovative power.”
Award organisers DECHEMA, High-Tech Gründerfonds and Business Angels Frankfurt RheinMain, with the support of premium partner Clariant, selected the winners from more than 30 applications, including for the fi rst time those also from abroad. An expert jury then selected 10 fi nalists for this third Award competition, who were able to present themselves at ACHEMA in a separate session and in the Start-up Area.
Dr Nikolaus Raupp from High Tech Gründerfonds focused in particular on the importance of disruptive innovation by start-ups for a faster transformation to a sustainable circular economy. Companies developing solutions for this were represented among the fi nalists, as were digitisation topics or platforms for new active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Joachim Reinhardt from Business Angels Frankfurt RheinMain highlighted this diversity and the high quality of the fi nalists overall. He emphasised the importance of contacts for young companies and noted the opportunity that ACHEMA offered the fi nalists as a platform for visibility and networking.
The three winners stood out both for innovative ideas that can achieve a wide reach and solve current challenges in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, but also for solid business plans that were put through their paces by the experts during the competition.
- Lumatix Biotech is working to increase the availability and affordability of antibodies by developing an effective isolation method based on a light-driven affi nity matrix. It is designed to replace the traditional enrichment method using protein A chromatography.
- PipePredict provides a predictive maintenance tool to reduce energy and media losses in pipe networks (water, district heating, chemical). For this purpose, existing sensor data is evaluated with a digital twin and machine learning algorithms, thereby preventing pipe bursts.
- Semodia offers software solutions for the modular process industry that transfer the principle of Plug&Play of the printer driver in IT to Plug&Produce medium Module Type Package to the modular process industry.
The ACHEMA Start-up Award is also supported by the German Chemical Society (GDCh), the Association of German Engineers (VDI), the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) and the AiF FTK, as well as the Business Angels Network Germany.
Frankfurt am Main will again be the meeting place for the ACHEMA-Community from 10 - 14 June 2024. We look forward to this next great opportunity for every participant to exchange in person on exciting and demanding topics
