Institute for Medical Immunology Adopts Electronic Lab Notebook


Agilent Technologies, Inc announced that the Institute for Medical Immunology (IMI), part of Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), has chosen the Agilent ELN electronic lab notebook to manage its scientific data.


"The IMI subjected competitive systems to rigorous evaluation, and we're very delighted that their scientists doing the testing unanimously selected the Agilent ELN," said Debra Toburen, Agilent Senior Product Manager, Informatics.


"The Agilent ELN provides the perfect set of tools for organising the large amounts of data generated by our scientists," said Dominique Demonté, Deputy Director of the IMI. "It also will be helpful in the application of our internal intellectual property policy. We based our purchase decision largely on the Agilent system's ease-of-use, architecture and also on the level of support provided by the Agilent team."


The Agilent ELN is designed to provide benefits beyond eliminating paperwork. Its scalable, integrated platform simplifies and accelerates the R&D process by facilitating collaboration in a secure framework. Researchers can easily search, retrieve and share data using the ELN's Web interface.

Vaccine Cold Storage Monitoring System Provides Vital Protection


An alert issued on the 21st of January by the National Patient Safety Agency requires all NHS organisations to ensure that they implement appropriate procedures for monitoring and responding to alerts in vaccine cold storage by July 2010.


For vaccines to be effective, it is important that they are stored within the temperature range recommended by manufacturers (+2°C to +8°C). Cool-Tel systems quietly monitor and record the temperature of pharmacy fridges, or medicines in transit, across the UK and abroad 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Early warning of potential problems are provided to those responsible, giving peace of mind that precious vaccines and medication are safely stored.


The real-time out-of-range alerts from the Cool-Tel electronic temperature monitoring system allow a rapid response to the problem. Compared with the traditional minimum/maximum temperature readings taken every 24hours, with Cool-Tel the vaccines can be moved to safety and clinicians can be confident that they remain potent and avoid wastage.


The battery operated Cool-Tel temperature monitor, when placed in any fridge, monitors the temperature at regular intervals, and uses mobile phone technology to upload the data to a secure website where the data is analysed, alerts are raised and audit logs are stored.


The technology behind Cool-Tel was supplied by Eseye Ltd, a supplier of cellular machine to machine (M2M) solutions.


With the contents of an average pharmacy refrigerator being worth up to £50,000, discarding vaccines that are deemed non-potent is wasteful and expensive. Incorrect vaccination storage, and lack of rigour in monitoring, can also lead to ineffective vaccination programmes, which is cause for concern for patients and their families and could potentially increase the risk of disease.

New Arrays for Detecting Disease and Ssyndrome-Related Aberrations


Oxford Gene Technology (OGT) has introduced three new CytoSure™ ISCA aCGH arrays to meet all resolution, multiplexing and budget requirements. Freeze drying is the process of drying a product in a frozen state under vacuum to increase product stability, minimise the effects of oxidation and degradation, and increase the shelf-life of the product. The process has found application for preserving products including biologicals, bacterial cultures, water-damaged documents, tissue preparations, food and therapeutic products such as vaccines, drugs, antibodies and proteins. A critical point in the freeze drying process is when the last drop of solvent has been removed from the sample - the primary drying end point.


There are two types of vacuum gauges/sensors that are routinely used in modern pilot scale and production freeze drying and lyophilisation equipment. The technical note describes how capacitance manometers and Pirani vacuum gauges work as well as detailing their operational advantages and disadvantages. By taking convergence data from a freeze dryer equipped with both capacitance manometer and Pirani gauge sensors the authors demonstrate a reliable technique for accurately determining the primary drying end point.
