Lightweight Handheld FTIR for Dedicated Field Applications
A2 Technologies has announced the availability of its newest portable FTIR system, Flexscan. Flexscan is a superior performing, mid IR spectrometer that fits in the palm of one's hand. A2 Technologies now offers two hand-held FTIR systems, Flexscan, for dedicated field analyses, and Exoscan, for lab and field use. Flexscan is ideal for dedicated applications that require the use of FTIR spectroscopy in out-of-lab settings. Since Flexscan's hand-held optics weigh approximately 3 pounds, its lightweight and extremely compact size is perfect for applications that require repetitive analyses on large surfaces, or in locations that are physically restricted. Flexscan is offered with a variety of sampling interfaces including diffuse, grazing angle, ATR and specular reflectance. Thus a broad range of materials can be analysed including polished or roughened metals, polymers, composites, plastics and most other solids. Scientists and engineers involved in applications including analysis of composites and metals used in aircraft and marine vessels, analysis of minerals or soils, surface coating analysis, analysis of contamination, corrosion or oxidation of surfaces, and in a wide range of research or troubleshooting applications, will find the Flexscan a powerful ally.
Flexscan consists of two parts: an optics module that contains the source, interferometer and detector all optimally coupled with sampling optics; and a power module that contains battery and electronics. The latter module is available either belt-mounted or held by a shoulder strap. The performance of Flexscan rivals or exceeds that of far larger, traditional analytical bench top FTIR spectrometers. This is a result of a patented modulator that has extremely short internal pathlength while retaining a large optical aperture. An important benefit of this design is that the spectrometer is very rugged, making it ideal for out-of-lab use.

Going Beyond Traditional Light Meters to Provide Full Spectral Analysis
Now available from Ocean Optics is a light-measurement system for spectroradiometric analysis of LEDs, lamps, flat panel displays and other radiant sources, as well as solar radiation. With its small footprint, powerful microprocessor and low-power display, the new Jaz-ULM-200 is a convenient, versatile alternative to standard light meters and radiometers. Jaz is family of stackable components that share common electronics and communications and are configurable for a variety of applications. Included in the Jaz-ULM-200 stack is a CCD-array spectrometer that can be optimised for a variety of radiometric measurements and a microprocessor with onboard display.
Jaz provides functionality not found in traditional light meters, allowing users to capture, process and store full spectra without the need for a PC. With only three pushes of a button, the system’s irradiance-measurement software, which is stored on an SD card, collects full spectral irradiance information from the selected light source. This data can then be post-processed to give the intensity parameter of choice, including W/cm2, lumens, lux, PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) or any other light intensity parameter. The system’s three-button wizard simplifies operation so that even non-spectroscopy experts are able to perform fast and accurate measurements.
In addition to the Jaz-ULM-200’s spectrometer and microprocessor, it includes an Ethernet module to store data via an SD card slot and allows users to connect to the Jaz unit via the Internet. The internet capability enables remote measurements such as solar irradiance and the creation of networked sensing modules. Also included are a rechargeable lithium-ion battery module (with SD card slot) for portability and a special mounting fixture for orienting the Jaz stack horizontally to facilitate hands-free operation. Additional system components include a direct-attach cosine corrector for collecting radiation within a 180-degree Field of View, a carrying case with shoulder strap and a rugged Pelican case for storing all related gear. Software includes the Jaz system software and JAZ-A-IRRAD, an irradiance-measurement application that comes on an SD card.

Turbomolecular Pumps for Mass Spec and Electron Microscopy Applications
Edwards has launched a new range of turbomolecular pumps that provide high vacuum performance in a compact size for laboratory applications such as mass spectrometry and electron microscopy. The innovative nEXT pump range offers a wide variety of sizes and variants giving OEMs and end users a greater choice and the flexibility to tailor the most appropriate vacuum solution to meet their individual needs.
The nEXT pumps offer reliable, high-speed, high vacuum performance, and are available in three sizes offering a choice of true 240, 300 and 400 litre per second N2 pumping speeds. Each is available in three variants: the S-Type is a simple turbo; the D-Type combines turbo and drag stages; and the T-Type adds Edwards unique fluid dynamic stages and the option of additional booster ports for increased system rationalisation. Custom interface splitflow variants are also available in three sizes for further vacuum system optimisation.
The pumps feature a field replaceable oil cartridge and bearing assembly and the user is notified as to when service intervention is required. This enables nEXT pumps to be maintained easily as users can carry out servicing in-house, which reduces the cost of ownership. The efficient pumps have low power consumption and also feature a standby mode, which allow users to make further energy savings.
nEXT pumps have extra low vibration and low magnetic field signature variants for sensitive electron microscope applications.
The compact design means the pumps fit together neatly in high product density applications. They are easy to configure and have an intelligent control interface accepting a 24 to 48Vdc input power supply voltage range and can be controlled using a simple parallel control or serial communications in both RS232 or RS485 formats.
