Transient Mass Spectrometer provides for Fast Event Gas Analysis Studies
Hiden Analytical introduce their Transient MS system specifically designed for the analysis of fast transient gas events at pressures near atmosphere. The compact benchtop system is founded on the Hiden HPR-20 QIC series gas analysers and features a purpose- designed fast response capillary inlet and the HAL/3F PIC mass spectrometer with pulse ion counting detector.
The combination enables inlet system response times of less the 150 msec with measurement speeds of up to 500 data points per second over an entire 7 decade dynamic range.
The system monitors species with molecular weights to 300 amu, with higher mass ranges available for specialist applications.
The MASsoft control and data acquisition program provides ease of operation with integral calibration routines together with user-programmable template files for automatic operation of routine analyses. Multiple I/O's permit integration of external parameters such as temperature or flow rates, and control of external equipment with species-specific pressure level sensors.
Application areas include pulsed gas experiments for catalyst characterisation, surface reaction and reduction studies, respiratory analysis, process control and, with high-speed rotating multiport valve, spacial gas distribution measurement as demonstrated in the award-winning (R&D 100 Awards) Hiden Spaci-MS system.

Ensuring Safety in the Textile Industry
PerkinElmer Ltd is helping the textile industry regulate the use of prohibited allergenic and toxic substances in garments with its high performance Optima™ ICP-OES systems. Swedish analytical company, Swerea IVF, is using the versatile and precision-engineered Optima ICP- OES 2100 to analyse exposure to residual metals from leading brands of jeans. The speed and accuracy of the Optima system is proving invaluable in the detection of low levels of heavy metals, including mercury and lead, which can have poor sample stability.
The analysis is performed as part of the OEKO-TEX certification for the safety of textiles. Swerea IVF employs an analytical model to mimic how metals are partly dissolved and transferred to the skin while wearing textile garments, such as jeans.
Once the metals have been extracted from the material using an artificial sweat solution, the samples are analysed immediately using the Optima ICP-OES to reduce the risk of decomposition. The multi-component spectral fitting (MSF) algorithm in the ICP software, combined with excellent wavelength stability, ensures optimum detection results are achieved.
Anders Blom, Swerea IVF, Sweden, commented: “We are very pleased with the Optima system from PerkinElmer. It is so simple and easy to run the analysis on undiluted samples and the detection limits are excellent. We compared the Optima with several other ICP-OES instruments, but were impressed by the sequential scanning on PerkinElmer’s Optima 2100 system and consider it to be a high-resolution ICP-OES instrument.”
“We are delighted to be working with Swerea IVF to help ensure the safety of consumers of popular brands of clothing,” said Dusty Tenney, President, Analytical Sciences and Laboratory Services, PerkinElmer, Inc. “Consumer product safety is a key objective for PerkinElmer.
We are committed to discovering new and more effective ways of using our detection capabilities to keep consumers safe from toxins and contaminants in everyday products.”

Fluorescence-Based Optical O2 Sensor is Portable and Battery-Operated
The NeoFox Sport from Ocean Optics is a portable, handheld optical oxygen sensor for measuring dissolved and gaseous oxygen pressure in a variety of media. The sensor uses a proprietary sol-gel coating that is embedded with an oxygen indicator and can be applied to patches or probes. Patches are useful for measuring headspace gases and other parameters inside packages and containers; probe options range from slender, 300 µm- diameter fibre assemblies for fine spatial resolution
applications to robust, -inch OD stainless steel configurations for process environments. Coating formulations are available for general lab use, high-sensitivity applications and hydrocarbon-rich sample environments.

Comprehensive method collection Intuitive multilingual software navigation Modular software concept No warm-up phase, plug and play Extensive range of accessories
Comprised of a probe- or patch-based oxygen sensor, plus a phase fluorometer, the NeoFox Sport fluorescence-based optical oxygen system includes an onboard microprocessor with low-power OLED display, a user interface and a battery pack. The user interface permits such functions as setting single- or multi- point calibration and displaying oxygen readings in percent oxygen, partial pressure, moles per litre and other parameters. Data is captured and stored to a 2-GB SD card for retrieval on the NeoFox Sport itself or via an SD card reader connected to a PC. Response times range from <1.0 seconds in gas to ~30 seconds in liquids, with dissolved oxygen range (O2% at 1 Atmosphere) of 0-100% for most applications.

NeoFox Sport sensors combine the best of advances in materials sciences and phase fluorometry. A fluorescence-based transducer material is trapped in a sol-gel coating that is applied to the probe or patch.
When the material, or indicator changes optical properties in response to specific analytes in its immediate environment, the NeoFox Sport measures the response. Unlike polarographic and galvanic oxygen meters, the NeoFox Sport optical oxygen sensor is immune to environmental changes in pH, salinity and ionic strength. Other advantages of optical oxygen sensors include no sample consumption, no need for frequent calibration and no interference from electromagnetic interference.
