SciTOX announced their second product release, the UniTOX toxicity analyser. The UniTOX is dedicated to the University and Research markets and allows those customers to develop custom applications and methods for toxicity and metabolic measurements.
The UniTOX builds on the first SciTOX product, ALPHA toxicity analyser. “Customers doing research or custom method developments in toxicity or cellular metabolic measurements can use the UniTOX to rapidly develop new test procedures,” according to Ralph Wattinger, the CEO of SciTOX. “The University departments that can make particular use of the UniTOX include Environmental Science and Engineering, Physiology, and Biotechnology,” he added.
Rapid Toxicity Measurement Systems (RTMS) provide customers with a fast method of determining changes in metabolism due to toxins.
A variety of cell types can be used for these measurements, and the effects of organic and inorganic toxins can be tested. The UniTOX continues the process of product development focused on specific, individual market applications.

Helping to Produce Precision Glass
Now producing per day, billions of unique glass beads used in ‘blood typing cards’, Mo-Sci Corporation relies on the Morphologi G3 image analysis system from Malvern Instruments to characterise these precision beads. President of Mo-Sci Corporation Ted Day, believes that the Morphologi G3 is the only particle characterisation system on the market capable of delivering results at levels of accuracy suited to the quality requirements of the speciality glass his company manufactures, where both size distribution and morphology have a critical impact on product performance.
“We tested multiple systems and found that, while able to characterise our specialised glass materials from a size distribution standpoint, other systems couldn’t separate out and identify individual particles that overlapped within the view of the microscope,” said Mr Day. “The novel dry powder dispersion system integrated into Malvern’s Morphologi G3 reduces the particle to particle contact numbers to within manageable levels, prior to any measurements being made. By increasing the statistical power of our quality assessment sample measurements, we are more able to demonstrate the true quality of our products. Also, because sample preparation is almost automatic, this system offers enormous advantage by both reducing sample preparation times and increasing measurement repeatability.”
Mr Day explained why the Morphologi G3 system is now an essential tool at Mo-Sci Corporation: “During the development of the unique glass beads used in blood typing cards, it could take three operators four days to look at the beads in a single card. We make a very large number of beads each day and need to regularly measure a statistically relevant number of samples. The Morphologi G3 can accurately measure all the beads on a card in around 15 minutes, and that includes setting up the sample. The measurements themselves take only a few minutes and produce enormous amounts of information.”

Maintaining a microbiologically safe water supply remains as important in high income countries as it is in the developing world. Microbiology specialist Lab M offers a comprehensive range of dehydrated culture media, including chromogenic agar and media supplements, specifically designed to aid water supply management. The range includes media for detecting coliforms including Escherichia coli, for isolation of enterococci, Legionella detection, and for performing total viable counts - a portfolio that helps ensure reliable results and compliance with evolving standards.
For coliforms and E. coli, Harlequin™ mLGA chromogenic medium and Tryptone Bile Agar provide highly sensitive detection of faecal contamination of water. Both are used in determining the effectiveness of water treatment and disinfection regimes, and for monitoring water quality in the supply network. For detecting enterococci, Slanetz & Bartley medium may be used for presumptive enumeration from water samples using a membrane filtration technique as described in ISO 7899-2:2000. Enterococci are confirmed by demonstrating aesculin hydrolysis on Kanamycin Aesculin Azide Agar. For the isolation of Legionella from clinical and environmental samples BCYE Legionella Medium is used and is detailed in internationally recognised methodology (ISO 11731:1998) for the isolation of Legionella spp. from water. Specimens or samples are often heavily contaminated with other bacteria and Lab M supplies the selective supplement GVPC to aid the specific isolation of Legionella pneumophila.
For total viable counts Water Plate Count Agar (ISO) and R2A Medium are useful in assessing ground water integrity and the efficiency of water treatment processes, and when determining the suitability of a water supply for food and beverage preparation. R2A medium is recommended by the UK Environment Agency in Methods for the Examination of Waters and Associated Materials, and Standard Methods for the Enumeration of Water and Wastewater.

The Time is Right
A Techne digital Gelation Timer provides accurate, reproducible results for manufacturers testing how long a sample or product needs to set from a liquid into a solid gel during polymerisation. Designed to discriminate between the viscosity of a liquid and the elasticity of a gel, the Techne Gelation Timer is a simple device that has been shown to determine the gelation point of a wide range of compounds with high accuracy and reproducibililty.
With push-button operation, a bright LED display and the facility for mounting on a retort stand, the Gelation Timer could not be easier to use. When gelation occurs the digital timer stops automatically, indicated with an audible bleep and light. Two models are available: the 1rpm GT-5 shows times in one-minute increments up to 9999 minutes, while the 10rpm GT-6 version displays to the nearest tenth of a minute, making it ideal for materials with shorter gelation times.
Rob Skehens, Marketing Director, Bibby Scientific, commented: “’Gel time’ is an important parameter in the manufacture of many compounds – whether fast setting or curing is required to speed up production; or slow gelation, and therefore a longer handling time, is an advantage. The Techne Gelation Timer is a valuable tool in diverse quality control applications, such as in the food industry, where gelatin and other setting or thickening agents are used as ingredients; for pharmaceuticals which require tablet coatings containing gelatin; for development of adhesives and polymers, including flooring compounds; and in the manufacture of agarose and polyacrylamide gels for life science analytical techniques.”
Techne Gelation Timers have led the market for almost sixty years and several British Standards for this methodology have been written with reference to Techne equipment. Available accessories include three sizes of stainless steel plunger (removable for easy cleaning), packs of disposable plungers, and sample cups. All Techne Gelation Timers are covered by a 3-year warranty and receive a calibration certificate for traceability.
