“People need to be outside, in

nature. It’s good for their body and soul,” says Brook McDonald, president/CEO of Te Conservation Foundation, a non-profit land and river protection organization with more than 3,500 members. Tat’s one of the reasons Brook is

spear-heading the drive to provide his organization’s support, fund-raising efforts, and information to Kendall County communities to help them reach sustainability goals. Each community has its own set of

issues, Brook explains. “We craft and tailor a plan based

on the needs of the community.” One community might have a

problem with flooding, another with

preserving their tree canopy in the face of die-off of Ash trees, he says. A community might not have the staff or expertise to solve these issues on its own. Tat’s where the Conservation Foundation can help. One of the Foundation’s recent

projects was to help the Kendall County Forest Preserve purchase 135 acres on Little Rock Creek in Plano that will open as a forest preserve in fall of 2018. Out of the $1.5 million acquisition price, the Foundation raised $850,000 in private money; the rest came from a grant.

With its Conservation at Home

and Conservation at Work programs, the Foundation encourages collecting rain water off roofs and using rain barrels, and using native plants instead of grass in yards. Tey have developed a pollinator meadow mix that grows two to three foot high prairie grasses and flowers that butterflies love. “It looks good and saves money,”

Brook says. “It’s great for businesses with large areas of grass that need to be mowed.” Te Foundation’s program office,

headed by director John Church, offers educational programs at the Dickson-Murst Farm, 2550 Dickson Rd., Montgomery. Te Farm is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
