Veterans Assistance Commission of Kendall County www.co.kendall.il.us/veteransassistance

Te purpose of the Veterans Assistance Commission located in the Kendall County Public Health building at 811 John St., Yorkville, is to provide assistance to veterans in need. “We define it as financial assistance -- shelter, utility, food assistance -- to veterans who fall below the federal poverty level,” says Chad Lockman, superintendent. For a single person that would be $18,090 a year; for a family of four, $36,900. In addition, the Commission

also represents veterans before the Department of Verterans Affairs for claims for disabilities incurred while serving in the Armed Forces, and does enrollment in the VA healthcare system, the biggest healthcare system in the nation. “Veterans applying need to fill out an application form, which we can provide and file on their behalf,” Chad said.

“Acceptance is based on income, unless the veterans meets a qualifying factor, such as a purple heart service-connected disability, or if they were a former prisoner of war. For Kendall County veterans with one dependent, they can make no more than $57,860 a year.” Te Commission, which employs three full-time people plus three part-time drivers, also runs a 12-passenger bus

four days a week, Monday through Tursday, to the Hines Veterans Hospital in Maywood, and has two other vehicles for local transportation and to the North Aurora Hines extension facility. “If you are in our system and if you have an appointment at another area medical facility and need a ride, we usually

can provide transportation,” Chad said. Veterans are entitled to a VA headstone or marker at no cost to thir heirs and burial in a national cemetery. Chad

says the Commission can also assist with securing these benefits. Spouses are also eligible he says. If burial is in a private cemetary, there is a cost for placement of the headstone, but not for the stone itself, he said. “We can also help with other administrative tasks,” he adds. “If a veteran has lost his discharge papers or medals and

awards, we can order a new set. We don’t facilitate the benefits ourselves, but we have contacts who do.” Veterans who want help from the Commission are encouraged to make an appointment. “We are pretty much a one-stop shop for anything VA or veteran related,” Chad said.
