Roxanne Essex, owner of Maggie’s Interiors, Inc. ended up an Interior Designer because of her husband. “I have always had a job, but about
five years into every job I would get bored,” Roxanne says. “Te last time, my husband said, ‘Find something you want to do. Why not go into decorating?’” Roxanne took it one step further - she decided to become an interior designer. “A designer has a degree in interior design or
interior architecture. A decorator doesn’t need a degree,” Roxanne explains. “I have a bachelor’s degree in interior design. A designer can gut a house if you need that. We know about
electrical, plumbing and construction issues. We have to study all of that.” After four years of college, Roxanne graduated in 2009, and she and her husband in 2010 moved back to Illinois, where she took a job with Maggie’s Place, a Shorewood retail store. “I became friends with the owner, and when she moved out of state, I bought the store in 2015,” Roxanne said. “It had been named after a friend of the original owner who was a victim of domestic abuse. I wanted to keep the name in her honor, but I did change it from Place to Interiors.” Roxanne says her firm can do something as simple as

window treatments, or paint consultations, or remodeling kitchens and baths, or redesigning rooms. She is a full-service interior designer who will meet with clients evenings and Saturdays because “not everyone’s available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.” Best of all, she is never bored. “I love it,” Roxanne says. “I don’t feel like it’s work. It’s my passion. I absolutely love it every day.”
