Capitano Deli and Sweets

What’s New in the Downtown . . . When Yorkville native BJ Gerl was young, his Aunt
Rosalie had a candy store. “Te store had all the old-fashioned kind of candy, all
the penny candies, taffy, the old-school hard candy,” he remembers. “Candy by the bag. You could fill the whole bag for a certain price.” When BJ, who already owns the Twisted Tomato pizza
place in Leland, decided to open another eatery at 220 S. Bridge St., at first he thought of having a candy store. But he says he also likes to cook and serve people food. “I didn’t think there was an old-fashioned deli in
Yorkville, a place that served the good old mile high pastrami sandwich or mortadela,” he says. “And I think there are enough pizza places.” Capitano Deli and Sweets is going to be a place where
BJ says his grandmas, one Irish and one 100% Sicilian from Palermo, Italy, would like to go. “We are going to have a handful of hot sandwiches
at all times,” he promises. “We’ll have home-made soup every day, salads like potato salad, pastries, and wine and cheese.” And his new restaurant, where people can sit at tables

is Sandra Hurtado and her business Harmony Aesthetics, opened in May 2018 at the northwest corner of Rt. 47 and Van Emmon. Sandra, a Plano resident, began Harmony Aesthetics
two years ago at another Yorkville location. When a downtown location became available, Sandra says she quickly took the opportunity to re-locate. “I just knew it was where I needed to be,” she says. “I
love historical buildings and landmarks. I’ve always loved Yorkville’s downtown.” Te services Sandra offers are full-body waxing,

employ special needs kids. “I have a 14-year-old son with special needs and he
is always looking for somewhere he could have a job,” BJ says. He plans to employ students from the high school co-op, he says. Why did he pick the downtown for his deli? BJ says it’s because he can remember back in the day
when downtown Yorkville was more lively. “We had a hardware store and a lot of stuff downtown
then. Now it’s getting more lively again. I like the nostalgia of the old downtown.”
