EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACT IVI T I ES 2017 - 2018

Active SPORT

Physical Education at Mayfield A

ll girls participate in structured Physical Education throughout their time at Mayfield, as part of the curriculum. In the lower

years, the programme covers a wide range of sports and activities including athletics, dance, fitness, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders, swimming and tennis. From Year 10, in addition to the mandatory sports, options are introduced into the curriculum, to give girls some element of choice. By Sixth Form, although participation is still compulsory, each girl may choose her sports sessions (although those in squads may be required to attend training at specified times). As part of the academic curriculum, Mayfield offers GCSE Physical Education and A Level Physical Education.

Once at Mayfield, girls are able to trial for a place in each of our Sports Squads. Currently, we offer squads in athletics, cross-country, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders, swimming and tennis.

As a department we are firm believers in allowing as many girls as possible to play in competitive matches. We regularly play both A and B fixtures and, on occasion, we play C matches as well. All teams receive specialist coaching whatever their ability level and all of our girls have the opportunity to participate in competitive matches during the week and at weekends. Where appropriate, girls are entered for County and National Trials and encouraged to train with outside clubs to improve their performance further.

The extensive extra-curricular programme supports all of these activities including a number of specialist activities which incur a further cost.

Athletics (Summer Term)

Athletics involves both general athletics practice for all squad athletes and individual event-specific coaching and training sessions for field events (long jump, high jump, throwing events). There will also be additional track fitness training sessions to work with girls on their running technique, general fitness, speed and/or stamina.

For: All girls selected to compete in athletics meets, or wishing to develop their athletics skills and be considered for the Junior and/or Inter athletics teams.
