EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACT IVI T I ES 2017 - 2018 THE FRANKLIN SOCIETY

The Franklin Society was set up to provide an opportunity for pupils to come together to discuss ideas, recent discoveries and developments, and ethical issues in Biology. Each week a member of the Society will give a talk on a Biological subject followed by an informal Q&A session. The Society aims to allow pupils to develop their research and presentation skills while broadening their knowledge and understanding of many aspects of Biology.

Those attending carry out research using articles, the Internet and papers on a chosen topic of interest relating to the Biological Sciences and present their findings to the group. This is designed to improve the girls’ research and presentations skills and provide resources to discuss in their UCAS applications or at university interview.

MESSy (Mayfield Environmental & Sustainability Society)

The aim of MESSy is to build on the successful initiatives it has introduced to School life in recent years. We will continue to research ways in which our School community can become more environmentally friendly and raise awareness throughout the School about ways of reducing both our individual and collective environmental impact. We will aim to undertake long-term projects and therefore girls will be required to commit to meetings throughout the year.

MESSy will also form the foundation for an Eco-Committee so that Mayfield can remain on track for full Eco-Schools accreditation, moving from Bronze to Silver Award this year,www.eco-schools.org.uk. Girls from all year groups are very welcome; particularly from Years 9 to 13.

Most of the meetings will be led by members of the Sixth Form. 24
