EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACT IVI T I ES 2017 - 2018

Maths, Science and the Environment THIS WEEK IN CHEMISTRY - A topical discussion group

This group is designed to give pupils studying Chemistry at AS or A Level an opportunity to explore topics beyond the remit of the examination specifications. Pupils will be encouraged to take an active role in preparing and contributing to the discussions, including undertaking research and making presentations.

For: Years 12 - 13 Led by:Ms Mistry Cost:Nil

DISSECTION CLUB

In this Club we will research and dissect organs or organisms that are perhaps not on the examination syllabuses or time prevents us from studying in depth. We will look at organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys and eyes in detail, discussing their structure and function; and organisms such as worms and finally rats. We will focus on researching the methods used to dissect, the ethical issues surrounding this and the technique of dissection and making technical drawings with labels and annotations.

Pupils must feel comfortable using the tissues and organisms described. This Club aims to allow pupils to explore Biology in more detail which is beneficial for interviews and to broaden your understanding of living organisms.

LOWER SCHOOL FARM CLUB

Following our successful first year as Lower School Pig Club we are broadening our horizons. We aim to keep a variety of livestock over the year: chickens, quails, sheep, goats and possibly some cows. Girls will be involved in the daily care of the animals and will learn farm husbandry. They will also look at issues such as sustainable farming methods and the importance of obtaining locally sourced food. We meet once a week on a Thursday afternoon.

Although we will not be keeping pigs this year the club's motto still remains 'from pig to plate'!
