Languages ANCIENT GREEK CLUB


Learning Greek opens the door to the breathtaking culture of the Ancient Greeks, inventors of just about everything from Drama to Maths and from Biology to Logic. As well as studying the Greek alphabet and the basics of the language we shall also learn about the Trojan War and the mythology of the Greeks and their neighbours, including the Minoans, the Mycenaeans, the Egyptians, and the Persians.

CLASSICS CRAFTS CLUB


Members will be working on three topics over the three terms: Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and crafts; Ancient Hebrew and crafts; and finally Ancient Greek writing and crafts. Girls can discover how to create their own Egyptian jar for storing body parts with a curse in hieroglyphs to protect the contents. They will learn to write their name in Hebrew letters and create, in various media, the ten plagues with which God convinced the Pharaoh to release the Israelites. Girls will also make an Ancient Greek mask and perform a short play in Greek.

LATIN SCHOLARS CLUB


This is for those girls who already think they may like to take Latin at GCSE or are already doing so. It will help girls to find a real pleasure in learning Latin and to read some stories that would not come up in their ordinary lessons. They will also have workbooks that encourage a little bit of Latin every day. Scholars will have the chance to sample some Roman cakes regularly and practise a little Latin conversation.

CHINESE (MANDARIN)


Chinese Mandarin is for anyone wanting to learn more about China, its language and culture. We will be learning some of the spoken and written language, exploring China’s traditional culture, we will be finding out about Chinese life, celebrating its Festivals and looking at the arts in the form of calligraphy and of course trying some Chinese food.


Pupils, native and non-native speakers, joining this club will be able to study to either GCSE or A Level exams and Chinese (Mandarin) will all also be available to beginners.
