sharon hilditchwrites nifty fifties Sharon HilditchMBE shares her advice for treating 50 plus skin

WithMother’s Day just passed, we had a lot of enquiries about products and treatments which are good for ladies ‘in their fifties’. Now we’re into Spring, it’s the time of year everyone starts to think about their skin care routine again and how they can look and feel their best.

Unfortunately the majority of ladies experience the most profound skin changes in their fifties, due to the rapidly decreasing oestrogen hormone – a result of the menopause. This results in the skin exhibiting lines and wrinkles, becoming dry and dull and losing its lustre. Facial laxity becomes more evident and also the results of long term exposure to the elements throughout the years certainly don’t help. Some ladies also experienceAcne type breakouts. So, how we can help our skin in the fifties?

to the rescue

As we reach our fifties and beyond, the hair and nails grow more slowly. Langerhans cells (involved in the immune response) dwindle in number, thus decreasing the immune responsiveness of older skin. Decreased size of sebaceous (oil) glands leads to dry and broken skin that is more susceptible to infection. After the menopause, oestrogen levels decrease and the skin has lost its plumpness and tone. It can also become dry and sensitive. Now is the time to work on any established and additional wrinkles and lines as well as loss of tone.

Skin needs nourishment and care and it is time to update your skin care regime to include anti-ageing products. Skin requires more intensive treatment rather than the usual cleanse, tone, moisturise regime. It’s also a time when you need to manage the signs of menopausal skin.

Remove dead skin cells – Gentle exfoliation will help rid the skin of outmost dead skin cells helping achieve a smoother, fresher skin.

Brighten dull skin and help clear dark patches –You can still create a flawless finish and even out any uneven skin colour with products that contain skin brightening ingredients, even better if they contain light reflecting particles that can be left on the skin to instantly help the skin look brighter. Peptides are really important at this stage of life so any products with a high percentage will strengthen skin and encourage new collagen production, which will be starting to deplete.

Hydrate, stimulate and help control skin flushing –With products that contain mallow extract, as this ingredient is perfect for redness and flushing (another common complaint in menopause).Mallow extract helps soothe and hydrate the skin and is particularly effective in reducing inflammation.Vegetable hormones actively help replace declining metabolism agents responsible for skin ageing with a natural alternative, so look out for these too. Encapsulated Q10 and Retinol are both fantastic and bring about a dramatic change in skin texture and firmness by reducing deep wrinkles and allowing re-saturation of energy within skin cells.

Make sure you use sun protection – Lots of people fall in to the trap of thinking by your fifties it’s too late to bother about sun protection but you couldn’t be more wrong. At this stage in your life it is important to take that extra care of your skin's health.

Mature skin is more fragile, prone to injury and infection, and bruises easily. As if this was not bad enough, it also takes longer to heal. So, taking care of your skin will reduce the ageing effect and keep it healthier as well as more radiant. It’s important to be using a good skin care routine that includes exfoliation and using active skin care ingredients that can smooth and hydrate the skin.

Glow fromthe inside out – Remember it’s also important you feed the skin from the inside out and a diet rich in essential vitamins should be followed.Any fruit is good but oranges are the king. They offer a massive dose of immune-system boosting vitamin C – over 130%of the recommended daily allowance – and a good helping of Potassium, FolicAcid and Pectin.

Everybody knows vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It is also one of the best known skin brightening agents and is proven to help prevent photo-ageing whilst, at the same time, stimulate collagen synthesis.

Treatments – Finally, consider adding treatments to your skin care routine. As well as looking after yourself you can never underestimate the benefit your skin can get from the intense treatment routines your local salon can give you. These will make you look, as well as feel great plus many of them will act as catalysts for your skin to stimulate itself and continue producing vital ingredients you need for a healthy and vibrant skin, like collagen.
