Whatmakes your salon unique?

“Probably the staff – the girls here are amazing and really take pride in what they do – we don’t have juniors or trainees doing treatments. New therapists have to be very personable and highly skilled. I think clients like us because we’re consistently good.”

What is important to you when choosing a supplier such as Lynton?

“I love Lynton because they’re highly professional – they’ve got great background support and you can ring and talk to their Doctors or specialists at any time. They really know their stuff – they have a wide and varied knowledge and a wealth of experience in everything they do. Like us, they are results driven, they test things and if they work they use themand if they don’t, they don’t – I like that!”

How has introducing the Luminette Advance benefitted your business?

“We introduced the Lynton systemabout two and a half years ago now – we had an IPL systemin place before that we used to have in the salon one day a week and it was fine but they just had no back-up so if we had any queries they just didn’t seemto know the answer.

“Fortunately, the treatments are alsomore effective and because of the support we have we’re able to bemore confident and competent when treating. It’s also allowed us to treat red veins and pigmentation, so it’s expanded our business offerings even further.”

So are there any plans to expand your treatment offerings further?

“Definitely, we’ve just invested in a new slimming systemand we saw a few different companies but it was just a no brainer to go with Lynton’s new ProMax Lipo because we knew we’d get the same support that we’ve had with the IPL. It offers Ultrasound Cavitation so is ideal for spot fat reduction and slimming treatments, but themachine also has Radio Frequency so it can do treatments for skin tightening and cellulite too.”

What would you say are your key achievements for you as a salon?

“As a salon owner I think one thing that probablymakesme proud is the fact that I’ve got such great staff who have stayed withme for years. I always try to consistentlymake themfeel valued and an essential part of the business, which of course they are.

“I tend to try and recruit people froma Spa or ship background. I don’t know if that’s just because that’s something I’mfamiliar

with but it seems to have worked for us so far. They are usually well-rounded, experienced and hard workers.”

When discussing your salon’s ethos youmentioned the importance of staff training, how often does this happen?

“We probably have some sort of company training going on every threemonths and I think that’s another reasonmost ofmy staff stay. They are passionate about the industry, they want to continue training and developing their knowledge, if they don’t get that here, they will go somewhere new.”

Who in the industry is your inspiration?

“Personally, it would have to be a lady called Liz Cartwright. Liz established East Midland’s College in the eighties, whilst running a large and busy salon. I trained with her and worked for her. I still talk to her about business even though she’s retired. She’s an incredible business woman and was always at the forefront of the industry.

“On a larger scale I’d have to say Judy Naaké, of StTropez – I just think what she achieved in 10 years is incredible, she’s fabulous.”

What is the best piece of advice you have been given for running a successful salon, or being a successful therapist?

“Itmay sound a bit basic but always pay your staff and always pay the rent. Oh andmy Dad always says you should try to pay good staff asmuch as you can possibly afford to – because if you don’t someone elsemight!”

When I heard about the effectiveness of Lynton’s LuminetteAdvance system, I was eager to try it out for myself. After completing the necessary consultation and medical forms, Sam talked to me at length about what the IPL treatments involved and what my expectations might be at the end of my course.

For my first session of IPL, Sam performed a simple patch test on the area to be treated. I was asked to put on the obligatory goggles to shield my eyes from the IPL flash and braced myself for what was about to come. Having researched and written about IPL hair removal treatments a number of times before I’d heard that the treatment can be likened to having an elastic band flicked on the skin and I can confirm that this is exactly what happened although it wasn’t as painful as I’d imagined.

Sam explained the more painful areas were likely to be where I had thicker hairs and a higher concentration of melanin in my hair follicles and the less sensitive areas were where my hairs were much finer and less coarse.Within what seemed like just a few minutes, the patch test was over and I was advised that I may experience some redness but this should dissipate by the following day. I’m happy to report I’ve had no adverse reactions so far and have now booked in for my first full session in a couple of weeks’ time. Keep your eyes posted for a follow-up review at the end of my course to see how I got on.
