spray tanning

Arecent survey carried out to gauge the popularity of sunless tanning across theUKreported that respondents experienced a 166% increase in spray tan treatments comparedwith the same period in 2013.

Carried out by a discount voucherwebsite, the research also identified a 243%rise in ‘fake tanning’ related online searches.

EmmaMackintosh explainswhy she believes the treatment is still hugely popular. “Going into a salon to get a tan as opposed to getting a natural tan allows you to be in control,” she says. “Afull body spray tanwill generally take round 15minutes in total to complete, whichmakes it an ideal treatment to fit into a busyworking day.”

a natural-looking tan

Over the years a number of trends have been seen in the spray tanning sector.Thankfully, when it comes to professionally applied tans,

the days of overly-orange bodieswith a sweet, biscuit-y aroma are, in themain, gone. The aimformost brands is to enable therapists to deliver themost natural-looking tan possible, whichmoisturises skin to deliver an evenwear.

Sowhat’s big for 2014? “The overriding tanning trend for this season is not about matching your own skin colour towhat you see on the catwalks; instead it’smore about enhancing your own natural colour,” says GemmaTaylor, BrandManager at whitetobrown. So choosing a brand that enables you to tailor your treatments through a full range of tan shadeswould be a good idea.

Also popular this year is the rise of skin- caring formulations, maximising on the benefits of natural ingredients such as antioxidant Pomegranate, and advanced skin care ingredients usually found in facial products. The natural, and in some cases organic, aspects of solutionswill also be popular, as clients become increasinglymore aware ofwhat they are exposing their skin to.

You also need to opt for a range that offers you a selection of suitable equipment. “It has to be fully functional in all areas of the job, durable, portable and effective,” explains SandraMcClumpha, global Fake Bake consultant.

Education and good training prior to offering your services to paying clients is also important. Choose a brand that can offer you good quality initial training followed by support and further education, or even a specific course, for the future. “Practice makes perfect for a good spray tan technique and our training courses demonstrate the skills to achieve a flawless finish, aswell as tips and techniques to give your treatments the edge,” explains LisaGerrard ofGerrard International.

“We (Fake Bake) are currentlyworking behind the scenes to introduce contour advanced tanning to our training division whichwewill be launching later this year,” adds Sandra.

good skin care

Skin preparation prior to tanning and after- care are also vital. The first stage should involve skin analysiswhichwill enable you to recommend the best tan and howyour client can look after andmaintain their tan using the correct product and formula.

“The second (stage is) exfoliation,” says Sandra. “This is a key step before your manual / spray tanning treatment. By buffing away dead skin cells, your tanwill last longer, appear smoother andmore even. The third step is tomoisturise and hydrate the skinwith a suitable oil free formulation.”

“Educating your clients on howto prepare their skin for tanning and to prolong the life of their tanwill help to growa loyal customer base that returns time and time again,” commentsNicolaMatthews, founder of SiennaX. “Reward this customer loyalty with discounts, offers or giftswith purchase, and the resultswill speak for themselves; word ofmouth recommendation is the best formof advertising.”

Look for a range that can offer you products that complement your solution, such as exfoliators, body buffers, moisturisers and body butters created specifically towork with sunless tans; thesewill also help add to your business’bottomline as they are easily retailed.
