SPORTS PILATES

There is no such thing as bad exercise just exercise done badly

movement due to the application of the right exercise at the right time with the relevant load or challenge. This will be facilitated through the instructor’s expla- nation, instruction, handling and quality of movement detail. The relevant level of exercises throughout the application of Pilates is important.

enable the local stabiliser muscles to undertake their specific roles, while main- taining neutral joint control (controlling continuous activity, independent of direc- tion with no change in the muscle length). The postural control element throughout movement is important as it is a tool to enhance body awareness either in a static position or throughout the movement. This process is achieved through sensory motor stimulation, moni- toring and instruction guidance thereby maintaining correct postural alignment.

This relates to the Pilates principles of concentration, alignment and co-ordina- tion/flowing movement. Furthermore the facilitation of the global muscle system, which is sufficient and correct enough to achieve optimal movement patterns throughout the exercise, is achieved by correct selection, direction and level of exercise to be used.

Sports Pilates uses a three stage applica- tion of the Pilates exercises to achieve musculoskeletal balance (Figure 3): 1. Core exercises - initiate contraction in key local and global stabilisers which are important to allow the progression of direction and muscle

contraction (eccentric activity) in the higher levels. 2. Foundation exercises - progress the challenge of movement, bringing in the global stabilisers to isometrically hold postures and work eccentrically to control the return elements in the movements. 3. Performance exercises - challenge the whole muscular system and act as high threshold or overload strengthen- ing of the global stabilisers. These exercises mobilise the muscular system in all directions.

The application of a comprehensive sports Pilates programme (extensive examples related to sports specific injuries are given in the book Sports Pilates (1)) results in achieving the ideal length of muscle, tendon and fascia while maintain- ing background core stability which is essential to movement in sport. 5. Neural component When considering the neural component, the main influence Pilates has is the enhancement of the motor control system and the acquisition of skills. Specific pat- terning and recruitment of the muscle sys- tem will be encouraged with this approach by developing awareness of

6. Mental conditioning With the application of a principle-lead exercise sequence achieved in sports Pilates, there is a development of move- ment and body awareness during the activity. This awareness allows for explo- ration of ability to move and thus devel- ops confidence in movement. This whole mental conditioning to movement will develop a sense of wellbeing, discipline and self image. 7. Physical and mental fitness The process of progressive development of a physically changing programme (ie. sports Pilates) will enhance cardiovascular conditioning as the programme develops in demand and intensity of exercise. This will be enhanced by the carryover effect on motor control development from the cognitive to the automotive levels.

HOW DOES THE SPORTS PILATES METHOD INTEGRATE THESE? First and foremost, the relationship that has formed between the Pilates world and the medical world has resulted in Pilates instructors being more educated in the principles of movement, thus developing the skills of applying the principles into a user-friendly concept to suit an individ- ual/group or the specific demands of a sport if they have the applied knowledge. Pilates instructors have the trained eye to spot when these principles are not occur- ring in the movements as they should be. The Pilates instructor is slowly becoming an important messenger for the medical world resulting in the global expansion of Pilates and its influence on the modifica-
