GOLF BIOMECHANICS

CONCLUSION It is important therefore that we give care- ful thought to the potential mechanisms of injury in the golfers we treat. It is always desirable, if possible without undue dis- comfort, to see the patient perform their natural swing to allow you to assess the degree of motion employed. You should also ascertain what sort of playing condi- tions were encountered prior to injury and whether the player has recently been upping their game and spending more time on the range.

As with all things prevention is better than

cure. So, introduce scapular and rotator cuff exercises to reduce the risk of shoulder injury. Encourage the player to take some lessons from a qualified coach to reduce the risks associated with poor technique and to have their equipment checked to ensure the grips and club weights, for example, are appropriate.

Whatever you think of golf as a game, it does represent an excellent opportunity for individuals to gain some exercise but also presents a number of manageable problems which may lead to injury if not tackled at an early stage.

Programme

09.05 Musculoskeletal Therapy – Multi-modal approach and specificity - Ann Moore (Eastbourne) This lecture will put the case for a multi-modal approach to treat- ment and will emphasise speci- ficity and patient focussed care.

or hands off? how to manage low back pain in the 21st century

In recent years the management of sim- ple low back pain has moved on from the days of bed rest to functional restora- tion and encouragement for patients to continue with their normal daily life.

Exercise and advice plays an increasing- ly prominent role in the management of these patients. The traditional role of hands on treatment is becoming more controversial, with experts claiming that it predisposes the patient to a life of dependency on the health care sector, whilst the proponents of hands on treat- ment believe that it will speed recovery and assist the overall package of care. This Symposium aims to present the evi- dence in support of both roles.

09.50 Back track: - Managing backs on a shoestring budget - Ian Bernstein (London) Using evidence-based guide- lines to debate whether all patients with low back pain should be referred to and NHS primary care-based service.

10.30 Refreshments and trade exhibition

11.15 Manual Therapy: Beneficial expertise within a package of care - Peter Wells (London)

A discussion on the rationale of manual therapy and its place within a package of measures to tackle ongoing low back pain. Evidence will be quoted where available.

12.00 Manipulating patients – Hands on is harmful - Stephen May (Sheffield) The lecture will consider the evidence, and the importance of patient involvement in man- agement; indicating not only that manipulation is of limited efficacy, but also might be doing harm by promoting patient dependency and under-

mining patients' belief in their ability to self-help.

12.40 Lunch and trade exhibition

14.00 Do we manipulate the soma or the psyche? - Nefyn Williams An evaluation of a primary care based osteopathy clinic provid- ed evidence that it was effec- tive and good value for money, particularly in terms of psycho- logical health.

14.45 UKBEAM (UK Backpain Exercise and Manipulation) trial main findings - Jennifer Klaber-Moffett (Hull) The evidence for the clinical effectiveness and cost effective- ness of providing manipulation and exercise for back pain patients.
