reasonably regular feature of the player’s career, it was sought and provided with an emphasis on preventing further injury and treating minor niggling injuries before they became serious. In this case, a course of osteopathic care was able to assist the recovery of the player considerably, from what the player and coaching staff had expected was a series of career-ending injuries; however, it would have been almost impossible for such treatment to have been effective if the medical team had not been unified in its support of the patient’s rehabilitation and recovery. The player did not suffer a significant breakdown again and retired from professional football seven years later.

CONCLUSION Physiotherapy is the most well-established of the physical therapies in the UK, but osteopathy seems to be increasingly in demand by athletes and their coaches. Osteopathy therefore appears to work very well in the sporting environment and, alongside methodologies such as physiotherapy and podiatry, improves treatment options and thus helps to increase the athlete’s chances of staying fit to compete and returning rapidly from injury.
