Welcome to the October issue of sportEX medicine. Hot off the heels of a resoundingly successful Beijing Olympics for
Team GB, Lynn Booth our sportEX medicine editor and the physiotherapy representative to the London 2012 Olympic Medal Committee, outlines exactly what practitioners can expect in terms of the supply of medical skills in 2012. This is the first of a regular set of articles focusing on London 2012.
On p7 we have reproduced an advice leaflet that we published in the July issue of sportEX dynamics, giving guidance on performing the commonly used strength development technique, the clean. As this is a popular exercise in sport generally, and the feedback on the leaflet has been so good, we felt it was worth repeating in sportEX medicine. Then comes an excellent review of the effects of sports surfaces on running biomechanics and injury followed by a very practical focus on the current evidence base and best practice in ankle ligament injury rehabilitation. Finally we have a slightly more unusual but very relevant article outlining the realities of drug use in sport and where our role as professionals lies in ensuring the safety of the athletes in our care. We hope you enjoy this issue.
