graphite flake to aid machining and good surface finish can be achieved with Superseed Extra inoculant, whereas Superseed75 is used globally as the preferred inoculant in the production of cylinder liners where the cooling is very rapid and a type A graphite is essential. Ductile iron throws up a raft of challenges. Products such as


Elkem’s patented Ultraseed Ce or the Rare Earth free alterna- tive Ultraseed Zr inoculants can be applied as part of a single or multiple inoculant addition, particularly in shrinkage prone irons. Te new UltraseedZr inoculant also finds application where chunky graphite is a problem. Tese two products also have been found very effective in irons made from pure magne- sium processes, such as converters and wire, where the residual nucleation levels are low. New types of ductile iron mean new challenges. Te increas-


ingly trialled solution-strengthened ferritic irons contain a lot of the graphitizing element silicon. Hence, the requirements of the inoculant are different and the effect is more of a modification than an undoing of the damage caused by magnesium. Too pow- erful an inoculant could promote shrinkage. Te same is true in compacted graphite irons where too much residual magnesium or inoculant lead to an excess of nodules. Careful consideration
