exchange system, type FSC, with furnace shuttle both for chassis components as well as crankcases. Te low-pressure furnaces used here, with single or multiple riser tubes sys- tems, have capacities up to 3,300 kg. Kurtz is not just a supplier of casting machines, but on re- quest also can provide the associated peripheral equipment, such as smelting furnaces, impellers and tool change systems. Success- ful, commercial designs are rarely found off the shelf – far more frequently they are tailored to customers’ requirements. Kurtz GmbH is a member of the Kurtz Ersa Corpora-

tion, an owner-managed, internationally active group of technology and supplier companies with a corporate history of more than 235 years and production plants in Germany, China and the US. ■

Advances in Inoculation of Gray Iron ى进得Շ术技育ベ件铁灰

Grey iron foundries have traditionally paid little attention to the inoculation process and simply added large quanti- ties of a calcium/barium material to their iron. However, increased demands from OEMs are now making high quality materials more attractive, and inoculants which are able to control specific properties are becoming even more popular. Inoculants are available to help produce castings with

excellent metallographic and mechanical properties and that have good machinability. Issues such as shrinkage and gas can be controlled with the right application of inoculant and the reduction in addition rates makes these an economically attractive proposition compared to the Ca/Ba materials. Te main problems in block casting using Ca/Ba inocu-

lant: a. Chill at thin section area; b. Open grain/porosity defect at bore area; c. Hardness variation; d. Poor machinability at face area; e. More type D & E at edge area. Te advantages of the Superseed®L inoculant from Elkem include:

• 97% Type A graphite • 205 BHN (spec 200-240) • Higher LET shows higher nucleation levels • No chill • No porosity • No D and E graphite • Better machinability. For further information, please contact

your local Elkem representative or visit us during Metal China 2016 in Beijing from May 17th until May 20th 2016 at Stand E439.” ■
