Crucible Furnaces for Energy Efficiency 效ৗ高提Ք炉埚坩ֹ新
StrikoWestofen, Gummersbach, Germany, has introduced
new crucible furnaces with porous burner technology that are capable of a 20% increase in energy efficiency compared with conventional crucible furnaces. Tese high-energy savings are a result of the optimal pre-mixing of gas and air and the resulting near-stoichiometric combustion. Tey are suitable for melting and holding aluminum and magnesium. Flameless burners heat the silicon carbide and steel crucible uniformly without causing any hot spots. Also, the low flow speed ensures the hot gases remain at the crucible for longer, thus allowing optimal utilization of energy. ■
The new crucible furnace can increase energy efficiency by as much as 20%.

In addition to the water jacket core, many sand cores are currently used for the production of crankcases to enable the inner contours (cooling channels) of the crankcase to be cast. “Open deck” has given way to “closed deck,” as the latter offers more stability, enabling the crankcases to operate with higher loads. Te best possible casting quality is essential. Cylinder lin-
ers mostly made of gray cast iron are employed less and less, as running surfaces are directly cast and subsequently coated while no pores may appear during the coating process. Tis and higher injection pressures require the best possible cast- ing quality and increasingly higher mechanical properties— both in the area of the crosspieces and the crankcase. Low-pressure casting offers the optimum process for
satisfying all of these requirements. Turbulence-free or low- turbulence die filling is of key importance here, thus oxide formation is avoided. Sufficient cooling is the most important prerequisite to
achieve the mechanical properties and to reduce the cycle time. Multiple cavity dies i.e. two crankcases per casting shot, is now possible without increasing the cycle time.
