Taurus 80 Opening Illinois Diecasting Operation :G[X[Y ҷ՚筹建ѣӮ诺ѣ州Ը铸Գ

Taurus 80, Torino, Italy, is setting up its first U.S.-based

facility, Taurus Die Casting LLC, in Rockford, Illinois. Te zinc diecaster is hiring 37 full-time workers and

will invest $6.4 million into a 44,000-sq.-ft. facility. Taurus 80 manufactures zinc parts for automotive safety belts and employs 268 people in its facilities in Italy and Tunisia. According to the Rockford Register-Star, $500,000 in

remodeling work has begun for the Taurus Die Casting LLC facility. Per the report, Roberto Marselli, president and CEO of

the Rockford company, visited the area last year to find the right spot for the U.S. expansion. “Our customers, our suppliers are in the U.S., mostly in the Midwest. Tat’s where the growth is,” he told the Register-Star. “So this is where we needed to be. Te labor force here is key.” Marselli said the company hopes to have 75 employees there within five years. ■

Public-Private Partnership Aims to Improve Cast Aluminum 采Շ666՟Ҁ方式ј提高铝՟金的ऒՆৗ力

FCA US LLC, Auburn Hills, Michigan, U.S., and

Nemak, García, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, are combining efforts with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to create light- weight powertrain materials to help the automotive industry reach its target of 54.5 mpg by 2025. Based at DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory

(ORNL), Oak Ridge, Tenn., the project is part of a new ini- tiative from DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Office to develop an affordable, high-strength cast aluminum alloy. “Te aggressive goals of these projects compress about half a century of typical materials development into a four- year project,” said Jerry Gibbs, program manager, DOE. Tis target means engineering a material that is 25%

stronger than current alloys and more durable at higher temperatures. Te researchers are using integrated computa- tional materials engineering (ICME) to speed the develop- ment of new high-temperature aluminum alloys for auto- motive cylinder heads. ICME enables researchers to tailor new alloys at the atomic level to achieve desired properties such as strength and ease of manufacturability. “Aluminum has been in mass scale production for more than a century, but current cast aluminum alloys cannot withstand the temperatures required by new advanced combustion regimes,” said Amit Shyam, principal investi- gator, ORNL. “Our goal is to take high-temperature cast aluminum where it has never been.” ORNL is breaking new ground by scaling ICME to run

on DOE’s Titan supercomputer, the second fastest comput- er in the world. Using Titan’s speed and parallel processing
