that wouldn’t require me to work fi ve, six, seven days a week. We went down various avenues without fi nding anything which felt right, but then, in May 2014, we came across Anytime Fitness.”

F

or all the riches aff orded by their busy careers, time was a commodity Russel and Emma Bennett found in short supply. The Derbyshire husband and

wife’s executive roles brought fi nancial gain, but the combination of commuting and hefty working weeks left them yearning for a more balanced lifestyle. With their schedules meaning they often passed ‘like ships in the night’, it’s not surprising that Russel grasped a chance to take greater control of his situation in 2013. “I had been with the same company for 12 years and had enjoyed every minute of going to work, but then I had an opportunity to leave and take a bit of time off to consider doing something else,” he explained.

“I had a year and a bit where I was able to take our son to nursery and school which was great. At the same time, we had always had in mind the idea of starting a business together. “We had always had enough money and enjoyed spending it, but this was about something more. I wanted a job

The Bennetts found themselves captivated by Anytime Fitness’s track record, successful model and potential for return on investment and future growth. But as much as the fi nancial facts and fi gures presented a compelling case, it was the chance to operate a business that would contribute positively to society, which convinced the couple to pursue the opening of Anytime Fitness Ilkeston. “It was an opportunity that we felt was right for us,” said Emma. “We had this philanthropic view of the world and wanted a business that was putting something back into the community.” An important decision facing all franchisees in the early stages of their Anytime Fitness journey is choosing the perfect location in which to open their club.

“Anytime Fitness helped us look and we had considered several possibilities, when all the time there was something right under our noses,” Emma explained. “Location is key and we are in a place where the footfall is great.” Although they were able to call on the skills developed during their time in the corporate world, any holes in Russel and Emma’s collective knowledge were soon plugged by the expertise available from Anytime Fitness. Emma praised

the business’s head offi ce team for its assistance in negotiating the lease, while Russel was impressed with the ongoing support provided to franchisees. “I would say that balance is defi nitely one of the best things about it,” confi rmed Russel, who now spends as little as a day and a half on site per week.

“I’m hands-on and I’m used to looking at data to see what is working and what is not, but we have a manager so I can keep the balance right.

“The beauty of Anytime Fitness is that the model is so well thought out. If you put the eff ort in, it just works and you can then make it fi t around your lifestyle. We’re not going to be millionaires, but we broke even in month eight and we will be able to make a good living.”

Anytime Fitness Ilkeston’s fi rst-year success has already got the Bennetts looking to the future and the couple are currently in the planning phase of opening their second club in nearby Mansfi eld.
