OBITUARY

MARC TWISK 1962-2016

HCB was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the sudden and untimely death of Marc Twisk, managing director of the European Chemical Transport Association (ECTA), on 26 July at the age of 54. At the time of his death, Marc was cycling in Belgium with Jos Verlinden, his good friend and former colleague at the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic). Marc collapsed suddenly and could not be revived by the emergency services. Marc was a native of Antwerp and after leaving high school joined VSB as a surveyor on petrochemical cargoes. Within two years he moved to Oiltanking Ghent as technical supervisor and QSHE manager. He later started his own auditing and consultancy company and worked for Bureau Veritas as lead auditor, handling ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 audits and coming to grips with Cefic’s Safety and Quality Assessment System (SQAS). During this time he also went back to school,

studying Level 1 Safety at the Katholieke Hogeschool ‘Sint-Lieven’ in Ghent. That led to a move to Cefic, where he became SQAS manager and took on the development of several best practice guidelines, including the SULID project.

In 2011 he decided that a move back into industry was in order and joined Transports Vervaeke as project manager. During his four years with the transport company he managed a range of topics, including driver training, Responsible Care, QSHE issues and operational excellence. His last move came in May 2015 when he joined

ECTA as managing director and Responsible Care coordinator. During his brief tenure he led numerous initiatives to improve safety in the chemical transport sector, many in collaboration with Cefic. Throughout his career Marc, ever energetic,

found time to work as a tutor at ISLA nv and also had his own QHSE consultancy and auditing company, Themis. Shortly before his death, HCB spoke to Marc about ECTA’s current activities and its plans for the years ahead. High on the agenda was the issue of driver safety and the need to recruit and retain quality drivers, a topic he clearly felt strongly about. HCB would like to send its deepest condolences

to Marc’s partner, Katelijne, and his two sons, Jonathan and Benjamin.
