PMU WIN AT BRAZILIAN JOCKEY CLUB
French company Pari Mutuel Urbain will become the operator of horse betting in Brazil through the Brazilian Jockey Club
Brazil - Horse-racing
French company Pari Mutuel Urbain announced it will become the operator of horse racing betting in Brazil through the Brazilian Jockey Club (JCB). PMU, signed a partnership agreement with Jockey Club Brasileiro to develop horserace betting in Brazil. PMU’s subsidiary PMU Brasil has been cre- ated “to manage horse race betting on behalf of JCB, taking bets in points of sale, via the Internet and by phone, and to produce and broadcast live footage of horse races.”
PMU's Chairman and CEO Xavier Hürstel said: "We are proud and delighted with this partnership with Jockey Club Brasileiro, which has given PMU access to the Brazilian market with the objective of boosting horserace betting and promoting Brazilian races. This agreement is the proof that PMU's expertise is acknowledged at an interna- tional level. This project is the largest we have ever launched outside of France and falls within the scope of our proactive international develop- ment policy, itself part of PMU 2020 plan."
Carlos Palermo, President of Jockey Club Brasileiro added: "With this partnership with PMU we are entering in a new era for the betting activi- ty on horse races in Brazil. I am convinced that PMU, thanks to its expertise and as the 3rd largest operator at a global level, will bring a more profes- sional approach to the management of horse race betting in our country. For JCB, this agreement will promote the transfer of know-how with the train-
ing of the Brazilian teams and bring new resources for the development of local bets."
Brazil horseracing is run by jockey clubs, which own and operate their own track. Each club is allowed to run off site betting agencies in the area where they operate. Situated in Rio de Janeiro The Brazilian Jockey Club was established at the end of the 19th century.
Pari-mutuel horserace betting in France is domi- nated by state company Pari-Mutuel Urbain which is made up of 59 horseracing associations. PMU is the leading pari-mutuel operator in Europe and the 3rd largest at global level, with close to 10 billion Euros in stakes in 2014. The PMU operates 365 days per year with a total of more than 17,000 races organised across the 252 French racecourses. As well as its domestic races PMU also offers an international option, to both promote French rac- ing in other countries and to let French customers experience racing from other countries. Foreign races have proven popular with French customers.
Through a number of agreements Brazilian race- tracks are now being broadcast live around the world commingling local races into single pools betting which means that the industry could ben- efit from modern, global pari-mutuel industry standards. And those outside of Brazil can now bet directly on the outcomes of Brazilian horse racing for the first time.
Mayor in favour of Las Vegas style gaming in Acapulco
MEXICO The recently elected major of Acapulco, Evódio Velázquez has come out in support of large scale casino in the city saying that casinos could be an extra attrac- tion to tourists. The left wing major said that casinos would generate the necessary tax income in order to pay for social welfare programs and would be used to generated additional tourist infrastructure and improve security in the region. He also promised that investors would be guaranteed tax incen- tives and legal safeguards over their investments.
"Acapulco has an adequate budg- et if spending is handled respon- sibly,” he said and added that the extra revenue generated by casi- nos would be used to diversify the number of tourist attractions
already on offer. Asked about the concerns generated by converting Acapulco to a Las Vegas type gambling destination Velazquez told Europa Press that: "There are clear laws in Mexico which can already pre-empt certain prob- lems. . .” and went on to say that there were already clear anti- corruption laws in place which allowed the government to trace the source of the investment in order to prevent money launder- ing.
Casinos he said would be prima- rily aimed at tourists rather than locals. “We must educate locals that casinos are a tourist attrac- tion. We cannot force locals not to play, that would violate their rights as citizens, but we should carry out a public awareness campaign so that they under- stand that casinos are a tourist
attraction that will generate jobs. They must be seen not be seen as a place for locals.”
The mayor also anticipated that a number of incentives would also be in place ahead of the govern- ment’s plans to change Mexico’s gambling laws. "We are going to open investment and will create a benefits package for those who believe in Acapulco and want to invest and create jobs here. There will be a package of tax incen- tives as well that will always be protected under law."
Changes to Mexico’s new gaming laws will soon be up for debate in the Senate. Possible changes could see large scale casino com- plexes so called “Preferred Complexes” which would be allotted in tourist hotspots that are on the Riviera Maya. However the news has led to speculation that Las Vegas gam- ing could be permitted in tourist hotspots on the Pacific coast as well.
