DIMOCO - ENERGYBET MOBILE CARRIER BILLING
billing, is due to the operator’s major presence in the UK and across European markets. “Carrier billing is a powerful tool for regulators to utilise in ensuring a shift from the grey-market play to transparent, legal, online gaming with licensed operators,” said Mr. Nowak. “Carrier billing is a mechanism to protect the legalised operators in European markets.”
Looking at the potential size of the carrier billing market for online across Europe, DIMOCO is bullish about the numbers going forward as it believes there’s a great untapped player-base hungry for quick, easy and secure payment method that traditional transaction processes aren’t reaching. “Coming from the iGaming business, the average European player, comprising 60-70 per cent of the market, is not spending more than 40 euros per month on bets,” said Mr. Nowak. “Operators are earning the majority of their income from these types of players – the mass market players. Carrier billing not only appeals to this segment of the market, it’s ability to place a cap on single bets and add a monthly limit to the carrier billing account, also ticks all the right boxes for responsible gaming.”
As a responsible payments method, DIMOCO is looking to establish carrier billing as a Gambling Commission/Regulator-friendly service that is not only secure, but offers players the ability to set monthly limits and individual bet caps. “We have been in talks with many gambling commissions,” explained Mr. Nowak. “A payment cap through carrier billing is something that they universally love and as such, we are partnering with a number of gaming commissions in a bid to remove the problematic aspects of online gambling, in which carrier billing plays a major part.”
Asked about the rather muted noise around carrier billing as a payment method, Mr. Nowak believes that its partners, such as Energybet, will be taking the message to its customers in the near future. It’s DIMOCO’s view that as the communication channels open and more and more people start to understand the advantages of carrier billing that it will become mainstream very quickly, just as it has done in the casual gaming sector.
Currently there are two payment models through which players can utilise carrier billing. Te first is a pre-paid sim card, whereby players charge the card from available credit. Te second methods sees bets charged to the user’s mobile monthly bill and it’s here that DIMOCO underline the usage of the monthly limit and bet cap. “Te reason for the cap is that we want to start with a limitation,” said Mr. Nowak.

“Together with mobile operators in every market we agree on the limitations that responsibly protect the player. Players are not able to run-up big debts on their mobile accounts due to the cap. As a player, if you don’t pay your carrier bill, then your mobile account is suspended. It is, in our view, the most responsible payment method available.”
Protection and security for the player is intrinsically built into the carrier billing method, and it’s the same for the operator. Mobile phone contracts are, by their nature, long complicated documents that require the user to submit lots of data. Users are made aware that if they don’t pay their bill, not only will their service be denied,
People will keep their credit and debit cards connected to their bank accounts. However, the opportunity to target the micro-payment group of customers with a simple, secure and fast complementary payment method is compelling.
but the mobile operator has debt collection mechanisms already in place and agreed to as part of the contract. All this makes carrier billing a very secure environment for the online gaming operator.
“At registration the igaming provider checks first name, surname, social security and address, and then we match to the carrier data and verify the identity of the player,” said Mr. Nowak. “It’s that straight-forward. Tere is no room for fraud, two-factor authentication. Using carrier billing, the operator knows exactly what mobile number is being used on the account. Tey know that the player isn’t using a ‘random’ credit card, for example. You have to use your own mobile device and your own mobile carrier billing account in order to play, which makes it completely secure.”
Te deal with EnergyBet is DIMOCO’s first activation of carrier billing in the UK igaming sector and is part of plans to roll out of carrier billing into the rest of Europe, creating a secure circle of markets and players, targeting all the regulated markets across the continent. DIMOCO is seeking to increase the numbers of mobile carrier billing users, not just in gaming, but across a whole spectrum of services, projecting that 50 per cent of mobile users will be using carrier billing in the next two years.
