every game manufacturers’ portfolio. So why do multi-games machines tend to steer away from licensed IP? Is it to reduce costs, or would licensed games not work as part of a multi- games mix?


Konami’s Steve Walther told us: “Typically when you’re looking to feature a licensed IP, companies want to support that brand with custom merchandising that is appropriate to the license. It helps maximise exposure and allows the players to immerse themselves to the license experience. It’s certainly possible that licensed IP could reach a multi-game format, however its chances for success would be uncertain.”


Creating a licensed multi-games mix could be a commercial risk and one that wouldn’t necessarily be supported by the operators either. Erik Sober of Casino Cosmopol:


“I think that the licensed themes would lose a lot if they were put into a multi mix. I guess that it would also create certain problems when


combining different themes in a machine because of the different brands.”


Mr. Rivas is more forthright in his reponse to the question of IP. “Personally, I don’t like licensed IP games for local markets, for me it is not an issue, whereas good math is. Te licensed games normally are expensive and the life-cycle is very short.”


It’s certainly interesting that our panel is so indifferent to licensed, branded games on multi- games devices, especially considering the huge volume of online slots games that are both branded and device agnostic. Visit any online casino and there are dozens of recogniseable brands, from Lara Croft to Batman, each played on mobile phones, laptops or tablets, which add nothing to the merchandising or theme, aside from what’s visible and audible on the screen.


Essentially, online slots casinos are multi-games machines, offering hundreds of games to a single device. If they can offer licensed IP games
