Russian slot hackers are believed to have turned their attention to slots in Peru in South America having already manipulated the maths used on slot machines in the US and Singapore to take millions in winnings. Te revelation was made by security consultant Rex Carlson and World Game Protection owner Willy Allison, who were speaking at the Luxor in Las Vegas at 17th annual North American Regulators Roundtable, organised by GLI.
Tey said that the Russian syndicate numbered between 40 and 70 individuals despite the FBI making its first arrests back in May 2014. Singapore authorities made more arrests in May 2016. Mr. Carlson said it has taken at least a decade for the scam to come to light as it was so covert and difficult to detect. He explained that with lot of computer resources available to them, the gang has managed to beat the RNG behind the slot machines.
Mr. Allison added that the gang used computer experts to devise algorithms to beat RNG if they aren’t robust enough. Both men said that cryptographic-secured RNGs were needed to help prevent the scam.

Island authorities seize 633 slots in gaming raids
Te Ministry of Finance of the Dominican Republic has destroyed more than 8,000 pieces of gaming equipment which were being used in illegal gambling operations.
Te Head of the Casino and Gaming Control Board Oscar Chalas explained that the equipment was confiscated in 1,376 betting centres which had been found to be operating without proper authorisation nationwide. In all 663 slot machines were confiscated along with 2,138 monitors, 2,053 printers, 1,950 keyboards, 733 routers, 251 pieces of electronic payment equipment, 254 CPUs, and 100 inverters.
Mr. Chalas explained that a total of 1,936 pieces of equipment will be donated to 10 non-profit institutions that carry out
educational programs in neighbourhoods and vulnerable communities located in different parts of the country.
Mr. Chalas said that it was the largest destruction of illegal gaming equipment in the country’s history and the second large scale operation carried under the present Ministry of Finance Donald Guerrero Ortiz.
“During the operations, which took place in December 2016 and January and February of this year, 1,251 betting centres were closed and 125 were given notice. Te total amount of money retained during the operations and that were handed over to the National Treasury was RD$1,590,253,” Mr Chalas said.

It is believed to have started in Lumiere Place Casino in St. Louis before moving on to casinos in Kansas City and in Temecula, California. Surveillance footage from the Lumiere showed a man playing some slots ‘while furtively holding his iPhone close to the screen.’He would hover his finger above the Spin button for long stretches before finally jabbing it in haste; typical slots players don’t pause between spins like that. Te outlay would be between $20 to $60 which over a two day period would yield winnings of $21,000.
