A summary of the year
My fi rst year as chief executi ve of Hampshire Hospitals has been an interesti ng one and our fantasti c staff have achieved amazing things in challenging situati ons. I’m incredibly proud to be part of an organisati on that delivers such great care.
Like the rest of the NHS, we saw a signifi cant increase in the demand for our services, parti cularly over the winter. More people arrived at our emergency departments than ever before, and many of them needed to be admitt ed to our hospitals because they were very unwell. At the same ti me, we conti nue to have a high number of medically fi t pati ents waiti ng in our beds.
For much of the year, too many pati ents waited longer than four hours in our emergency departments. The increased emergency demand has meant that we have not done as much planned care, such as non-emergency operati ons, as we had hoped, which has had an eff ect on the money we receive.
Despite all of this and thanks to the eff orts of all of our staff , we were able to meet the majority of the relevant nati onal targets in diagnosti cs and cancer care for most of the year. Pati ents also reported positi ve experiences in the inpati ent, emergency department and maternity pati ent surveys run by the Care Quality Commission. The Care Quality Commission inspected our minor injury unit at Andover and rated it as ‘Good’.
