Case Study

Sustainability manager, Gillian Brown, studied conservati on and has worked in the NHS for 10 years. She is responsible for the Trust’s energy effi ciency, biodiversity and works closely with the waste manager. Supported by a sustainability research student, Gillian also looks at how we improve and uti lise our outdoor environments for pati ents and staff .

Her success this year includes securing an interest-free loan of £350,000 to upgrade the Trust’s corridor lighti ng to LED, which should bring over £60,000 in electricity savings each year.

“By making sure that we are as energy effi cient as possible, we can have an impact on pati ent care. Of course, every pound we save can be ploughed back into pati ent care, but there are other impacts people should know about.

“For instance, by making sure that our pipes are properly insulated, we can help pati ents not to get too hot in the summer. Also, if we are able to fi nd ways to help our staff and pati ents leave their cars at home, even if it’s not every day, that will have an impact on the air quality and therefore everyone’s health. And if people are walking or cycling to our hospitals, that will have a positi ve impact on their wellbeing as well.

“Our Trust spends £3.5m on energy every year, so even small changes could mean that we make big savings.

“I love this job, but it is not just a job for me – I lead my life in this way. I would fi nd it hard to do a diff erent job, because it’s hugely sati sfying to know that I’m having an impact on the planet.”
