Recruiti ng and investi ng in staff
We aim to att ract the best people to join our Trust, while developing and investi ng in our existi ng staff .
We recruit staff who demonstrate that they share our values. We work closely with our educati on partners to att ract and train the best people, providing high-quality learning environments and practi ce placements, with experienced mentorship support. More than 100 newly-qualifi ed nurses and allied healthcare professionals joined us as preceptees last year, while our return-to-practi ce programme has doubled in numbers.
Our military engagement programme, Step into Health, has also gone from strength to strength. The
programme off ers support to service leavers, reservists, veterans and their spouses. During 2017/18, 22 military service leavers and 18 service spouses were recruited into the Trust.
We conti nue to support staff through apprenti ceships and a variety of vocati onal courses, including functi onal skills. Last year, 59 apprenti ceships were commissioned. We have also supported an increased number of clinical support workers to study either for the Care Certi fi cate or the Foundati on Degree in Health and Social Care.
We have been involved with piloti ng the development of the new nursing associate role, which will bridge the gap between clinical support workers and nurses to deliver hands-on care for pati ents. The 10 staff who joined
the programme last year have now moved on to Year 2 of the two-year academic programme to become nursing associates, and this year we are supporti ng 15 of our staff to follow in their footsteps. They will learn to carry out duti es such as medicines management, and will be regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
In January 2018 the Trust was successful in its applicati on to be added to the offi cial Register of Apprenti ceship Training
Providers. This means in autumn 2018, HHFT will begin delivering apprenti ceship training to new and existi ng health care support workers and administrati on and clerical staff across the Trust. This will result in the delivery of superior quality
training aimed at upskilling existi ng staff , off ering nati onally recognised training programmes to new recruits, and the creati on of clear career pathways to all staff .
